Benton, whose death occurred at his home north of Malvern July 14. The services were attended by a very large number of friends and relatives who came to pay a final tribute to a man who had taken a prominent part in community life for nearly half a century. The services were conducted by the Rev. Hugh Shiveley. Music was furnished by Richard Goy who was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Austin Bass. Serving as pall bearers were Ned Turner, Don Primrose, Richard Henderson, Orville Babbitt, James Kelley and Ralph Bower. Mrs. Turner, Mrs. John Adams, Mrs. Babbitt, Mrs. Bower and Mrs. Vern Dunn cared for the flowers. Mrs. Robert Campbell was in charge of the registry book. Born April 4, 1907, Max was the son of Albert A. and Arvilla Summers Benton, both members of pioneer families of this area. He lived all of his life in this vicinity. After attending Malvern high school he took up farming, first in the Henderson and Silver City areas and later on the place just north of Malvern which he operated as Benton's Quarter Horse ranch. In 1931 he was married to Faye Hurst. Their children are Raburn, Malvern; Roger, Mesa, Arizona and Eleanor (Mrs. Morris Parks), Malvern. Mr. Benton was active in a number of community organizations -- the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department, the Trail Riders Saddle Club, and others. He had a strong sense of neighborhood responsibility and on many occasions was a leader in instigating good neighbor work projects to help out those who, because of illness, accidents or other misfortune, needed an extra boost with their farming. Fond of horses, he was active in developing interest in riding and horsemanship and in improvement of the breed of Quarter horses. He is survived by his wife and children; 3 grandchildren, Todd and Holly Benton and Lori Parks, all of Malvern; a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Frances) Brinkhouse, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; three brothers, James N., Malvern; Col. Tom, Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Herb, Stanberry, Missouri; and a large circle of friends.
