Ross Succumbs To Illness Prominent Civil War Veteran Passed Away Yesterday James O. Ross passed away at his home in Westernport yesterday morning, Thursday, June 2 at 4 o’clock, aged 76 years. Mr. Ross was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. C., Second West Virginia Cavalry, of the Union Army, for three years. He was for a time a prisoner in the Libby prison and was released in an exchange of prisoners. He was an active worker in the local G. A. R. post and had participated in the Memorial Day services every year since the custom of their observance was inaugurated in the Tri-Towns. He was a veteran engineer of the Cumberland and Pacific Railroad and had served as engineer on that road for some thirty-five years. He was retired from the service in 1900. Mr. Ross had also been a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 3, Knights of Pythias, for forty-two years, and that organization will attend the funeral in a body. The funeral service will be held at the home in Westernport on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Rev. Harry G. Spencer, pastor of the First M. E. Church will officiate. The Barton Band will be in attendance also, and members of Kelly-Mansfield Post, American Legion, will conduct military honors over the grave. Mr. Ross had been ill for the past two weeks, having suffered a stroke of paralysis on May 15. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Noah Davis of Westernport, and Mrs. Leonard Dawson, of Piedmont, and one son, C. E. Ross, of Roanoke, Virginia.
