Dunn, 72, served as solicitor for Horry and Georgetown counties for 12 years before retiring in 1990. Dunn was portrayed in the 1986 CBS TV movie, ``Vengeance: The Story of Tony Cimo .'' Cimo was convicted of hiring Pee Wee Gaskins, perhaps the state's most notorious killer, to kill Rudolph Tyner in prison. Tyner had received the death penalty for killing Cimo 's parents, Bill and Myrtle Moon, in their Murrells Inlet grocery store in 1978. Dunn was the lead solicitor in Tyner's trial. ``He was the best criminal lawyer I've ever seen,'' said Ralph Wilson, who followed Dunn as 15th Circuit solicitor from 1990 to 1998. ``I've seen a lot of lawyers over the years, but I've never seen one better than Jim Dunn. He commanded just an awesome amount of respect. Everybody knew if you went to trial with Jim Dunn you were in for a fight.'' Dunn also successfully prosecuted death penalty cases against Rusty Woomer and Alvin Owens. Woomer was put to death in 1990 for the 1979 killings of four people in Horry and Georgetown counties. Dunn came to the death watch outside the state prison with tombstones bearing the names of Woomer's victims. Owens was given the death penalty in 1986, two years after he kidnapped and killed his Garden City Beach employer. The victim's body was never found, making it the state's first death penalty case in which a body was never found, said Wilson, who was Owens' defense attorney. Owens' sentence was changed to life in prison, however, after a 1991 retrial. ``He was one of the most thorough attorneys when it came to preparation,'' current Solicitor Greg Hembree said. ``He looked under every rock and behind every tree. The police would get aggravated, because he would go over and over things. But they were so well prepared, they were thanking him.'' Hembree and Wilson also remembered Dunn for his flamboyant personality outside of the courtroom. Both recollected Dunn wearing a tuxedo as he walked on stilts at two separate functions. When Wilson was running for office, Dunn roamed the crowd on the stilts at the Galivants Ferry Stump to rally support for his deputy solicitor. Tall and thin, Dunn always wore a black suit when working. He said he bought them from the undertakers at Latimer's Funeral Home. When not working, he liked to go shrimping and boating in Murrells Inlet on his shrimp boat, the T.Tiny, named for his mother. For years, he and the boat were fixtures in the Murrells Inlet Fourth of July boat parade. ``If there ever was a master at getting attention and holding attention, it was Jim,'' Wilson said. Hembree remembered the 1990 night that Dunn, attending his last function as solicitor, stole the show at the state solicitor's conference, wearing the suit and stilts. ``It was a formal banquet,'' he said. ``All of a sudden you heard a racket from the kitchen. It was Jim wearing those stilts and the tuxedo. It was unbelievable. ... The crowd just went crazy. ``He was one of those kinds of people that when he walked into a room, everybody knew he was there. He was bigger than life.'' Dunn, who had been suffering from health problems, will be buried on Monday at Conway's Lakeside Cemetery after a funeral service at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet.
