James Patterson was born January 28, 1876 at Tyron, North Ireland to Alexander and Mary Ann Patterson and died September 18. His exact age was 88 years, 7 months and 20 days. He was one of six children, all of whom preceded him in death. As a child he was baptized in the Drumquin Prebyterian church and later transferred his membership to the Lewellen Methodist church. He was married to Lena Gordon January 23, 1913 in Ireland and together they came to Garden county in February of 1914 where he was actively engaged in farming until his retirement in 1955 when they moved to Lewellen to make their home. To this union were born eight children who along with his wife, Lena, survive. They are Mrs. E. C. Orr of Denver, Mrs. George Orr of Lewellen, Mrs. Roscoe Roberts of Wray, Colorado, Mrs. Thomas Lord of Wray, Colorado, Jim Patterson of Ogallala, Mrs. Duane Robinson of Littleton, Colorado, Mrs. Richard Fischer of Oshkosh and Bill Patterson of Oshkosh [editor: The daughters and sons-in-law were Mary "Mae" and Emery Orr, Marjorie and George Orr, Winifred "Winnie" and Roscoe "Conk" Roberts, Lena "Nellie" and Thomas Loyd, Elizabeth "Lillie" and Duane Robinson and Dorothy and Richard "Pete" Fischer¹]. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday of this week at the Lewellen Methodist church with the Rev. Philip LaBue officiating. Holechek Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Melvin Whilte, Frank Robinson, Doald Fischer, Keith McCormick, William Hamilton and Sam Robb and burial was in the Ash Hollow cemetery. ¹ Historical Society of Garden County, "History of Garden County Nebraska 1886-1986".
