Description	:	James was first married to Emily C. Tuite on October 19, 1876, in Fulton County, Illinois. I last see Emily in the 1880 Census for Isabel, Fulton County, Illinois, living with James and their son, John M., age 2, and daughter, Allis [sic] C., age 10 months. James' death certificate may be seen in both familysearch.org and ancestry.com. On that certificate, his parents were named as Milton and Alice (unknown maiden name) James' parents were Montgomery and Alice (Walker) Matthews. He is shown with them in the 1860 and 1870 Census records. James R. Matthews married Luella H. Collins on February 14, 1897, in Iowa City, Iowa. On that marriage record, he named his parents as Montgomery and Alice (Walker) Matthews. I cannot find a marriage record for James to his third wife, Louisa, but in the 1910 Census for Cutler, Franklin County, Kansas, they stated they had been married for five years. In the 1925 Census for Ottumwa, Iowa, James stated that his father's name was Montgomery Matthews. --------------- In James' obituary, which I have transcribed below, his last name was spelled Mathews. I have transcribed the obituary as written. Obituary From "Ottumwa Daily Courier," Saturday, February 24, 1934, Page 14: James R. Mathews, 81 years old, died at the home of his son, John Mathews, seven and one-half miles south of Ottumwa, at 7 a.m. today. He is survived by two sons, John Mathews of near Belknap and Ralph of Fremont; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Long of Cuba, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Atlantis Bainter of Lewiston, Ill. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel. The Rev. Roy C. Leeds, pastor of the Davis Street Christian church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Shaul cemetery.
