Jim died Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Community Pride Care Center, Battle Creek. James Richard Volk was born on November 21, 1932 to John C. and Amelia (Schmidt) Volk in the Volk farm house south of Battle Creek, Nebraska. He lived there his entire life until entering Community Pride Care Center in January, 2016, following a stroke and heart attack. Jim was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church (Heights), rural Battle Creek, on December 18, 1932, and confirmed there on April 14, 1946. Jim attended St. Peter Lutheran elementary school and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1950. Jim married Stella Mae Miller on October 5, 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Jim and Stella farmed and raised purebred hogs and cattle. Jim dedicated his life to the art of breeding better livestock, raising Specific Pathogen Free Hampshire and Yorkshire hogs and Simmental cattle. Jim was a member of the Heights Mens Club, Heights Card Club, the American Yorkshire Club, Hampshire Swine Registry, Madison County 4-H, and Battle Creek FFA Alumni. He served as the second president of the Nebraska Pork Producers from 1964 to 1967 and on boards of directors for the National Live Stock and Meat Board from 1967-1975, the American Yorkshire Club from 1983-1988, and Faith Regional Hospital from 1983-2010. Jim attended National 4-H Club Congress in 1953 and traveled to South America on a People to People International Ambassador trip in 1963. Jim & Stella received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree from Battle Creek FFA and the Honorary State Farmer Degree from Nebraska FFA. Jim was recognized as a Pork All American in 1970, received the Nebraska Pork Producers Builder Award in 1977, Nebraska Swine Improvement Federation Achievement Award in 1978, was the University of Nebraska Block & Bridle Club Honoree in 1991, and was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement in 1992. Jim judged many swine shows and enjoyed current events, politics, and sports. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities. He lived his faith and shared it with his family and friends. Jim and Stella hosted 25 Japanese Agriculture Trainees who lived and worked on the Volk farm from 1967 to 1985. Jim is survived by son J.D. Volk and fiancé Cathy Helvie of Battle Creek; son Tom Volk and wife Debbie of Lincoln; daughter Jan Frenzen and husband Craig of Fullerton; daughter Sue Volk and husband Mark of Cave Creek, AZ; one brother, Robert Volk of Arlington, and sister-in-law Josephine (Ken) Volk of Omaha. His grandchildren are Bryan (Megan) Buckendahl, Dylan (Alisha) & Rylie Volk of Norfolk, Katie (Matt) Hothem of Sumner, Jamie (Thomas) Ksiazek of Brookings, SD, Emily Frenzen of Fullerton, Mitchell Volk of Iowa City, IA, Lexie & Ellie Volk of Lincoln, and great-grandchildren Chloe & Avery Volk and Bailey & Hudson Buckendahl of Norfolk. He was preceded in death by Stella, his wife of 53 years; his parents; brothers John and Ken Volk, and sisters Helen (Willis) Grant and Betty (Don) Bierman.
