Stella Mae died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Community Pride Care Center, Battle Creek, Nebraska. Stella Mae (Miller) Volk was born November 11, 1928 to David C. Miller and Amanda L. (Borgelt) Miller in Norfolk, Nebraska. She attended Rural School District #57 in Madison County; also St. Peters Lutheran (Heights) school. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters by Pastor Carl J. Sundermann. Stella attended Battle Creek High School and graduated with the class of 1946. She taught Rural School District #57, Madison County and then attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward. She taught at St. Peters Lutheran School and St. John's Lutheran School in Battle Creek. Stella and James R. Volk were married by Pastor F. J. Rath on October 5, 1958 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Stella was a member and officer of St. Peter's Ladies Aid and also a Sunday School teacher and Youth Leader of St. Peter's church. She was a member and officer of the 81-91 Porkettes; Sweet Sixteen Extension Club member and officer; and helped organize and performed in the Heights Kitchen Band. She was a member of the Madison County Ag Society; the Nebraska Porkettes; and was Mrs. Nebraska Porkette in 1981. She was "mother" to 25 Japanese agriculture trainees who lived and worked on the Volk farm. She is survived by her husband, Jim, of 53 years; by son J.D. Volk and his friend Cathy Helvie of Battle Creek; son Tom Volk and wife Debbie of Lincoln; daughter Jan Frenzen and husband Craig of Fullerton; daughter Sue Volk and her friend Mark Bredfeldt of Omaha; and one sister, Thelma Miller, of South Carolina. Her surviving grandchildren are Bryan Buckendahl of Omaha; Dylan and Rylie Volk of Norfolk; Katie, Jamie, and Emily Frenzen of Fullerton and Mitchell, Lexie, and Ellie Volk of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents and her cousin, Fritz Ziehmer, who was raised like a brother to her.
