Description	:	James Robert Kerns, 82, of Bob White went home to be with his heavenly Father on Monday, November 19, 2007, after an extended illness. He was born October 23, 1925, in Johnson County, Kentucky, and was a son of the late Clarence and Ella McKenzie Kerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, James Douglas "Doug" Kerns of Van; infant grandson, Roger Ray Samples of Bob White; brothers, Howard of Paintsville, Kentucky, Jack of Orient, Ohio and Richard of Tennessee; and sisters, Doris Anette Kerns of Kentucky and Jessie Kerns Eigensee of Columbus, Ohio. He... Read More	James Robert Kerns, 82, of Bob White went home to be with his heavenly Father on Monday, November 19, 2007, after an extended illness. He was born October 23, 1925, in Johnson County, Kentucky, and was a son of the late Clarence and Ella McKenzie Kerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, James Douglas "Doug" Kerns of Van; infant grandson, Roger Ray Samples of Bob White; brothers, Howard of Paintsville, Kentucky, Jack of Orient, Ohio and Richard of Tennessee; and sisters, Doris Anette Kerns of Kentucky and Jessie Kerns Eigensee of Columbus, Ohio. He was a retired coalminer with over 40 years of service, most of that time for Eastern Associated Coal at Wharton and Island Creek Coal Company at Bob White. He was a 60-year member of the UMWA, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Daniel Boone Post 5578, Madison, WV. He was an outdoorsman, an avid hunter and fisherman and he liked to ginseng. Most importantly, he loved the Lord. He enjoyed reading his Bible and quoting scripture. He was a member of Cazy Freewill Baptist Church for over 42 years, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and trustee. Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Marcelene Eskew Kerns of Bob White; two daughters, Diana Kerns Moore and husband, Junior, of Bim and Karen Kerns Halcomb and husband, John, of Alderson; daughter-in-law, Marie Kerns of Van; grandchildren, Sheryl Moore Kessinger and husband, Stacy, of Turtle Creek, Rob "Tater" and wife, Mandy Dickerson Moore, of Bob White, Mark and wife, Julie Setser Kerns, of Charleston, Stephanie Samples Lee and husband, Scott, of McChord AFB Seattle, Washington, Jamie and wife, Stacey Waller Kerns, of Bridgeport and Darren Davis of Alderson; 11 great-grandchildren, Brandon Lee, Kristin Lee, Zachary Kerns, Logan Lee, Emily Moore, Katie Kerns, Bethany Moore, Leah Kessinger, Isaiah Kerns, Dalton Kessinger and Ryan Lee; two brothers, Ray D. And wife, Madge Kerns, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Kenneth Kerns of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Neva Brown of Flat Gap, Kentucky, Ruth Maddix of Scott Depot and Grace and husband, Brian Barber, of Paintsville, Kentucky; brother-in-law Ray L. Eskew of Wolverine, Mich.; sister-in-law, Olga Kerns of Paintsville, Kentucky; six nieces and nine nephews; many friends and neighbors and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ. He was a "dad" and "papa" to many more. He wanted it known that he dearly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and happily remembered and forever loved. Proverbs 17:6 - Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 23, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. Tom Price, the Rev. Mike Allen and Pastor Gary Hunt officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Madison, with military graveside rites performed by VFW Daniel Boone Post 5578 Madison, West Virginia. Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, it was James' request that donations be made to Cazy Freewill Baptist Church, Bob White, WV 25028. You may express your condolences to the family at www.handleyfh.com. James' favorite bible verse was Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thine own understanding.
