He was raised and educated in Albion and graduated from the Albion High School in 1938. He was raised and educated in Albion and graduated from the Albion High School in 1938. Following graduation James played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1938 to the spring of 1940. He married Bessie Matney on December 21, 1940, in Albion, Iowa. Following their marriage they made their home in Marshalltown. He was employed by Fisher Controls for a short time before serving his country on the USS Jerauld as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge James returned to Marshalltown and was employed by Fisher controls as a machine operator for over 42 years until he retired in 1982. James enjoyed coaching baseball, bowling, and fishing. But most of all he enjoyed traveling with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He was the Past First President of the Fisher Credit Union in Marshalltown, a member of the Marshalltown Moose Lodge #313, the UAW Local 893 and the V.F.W. Harry C. Harter Post # 839 of Marshalltown. James is survived by his wife Bessie of Conrad, his daughter Brenda (John) Wardman of Schuyler, Nebraska, his two sons: Alan (Jennifer) Maxfield and Steve Maxfield both of Marshalltown, his two sisters Ruth Benbow and Doris Maxfield both of Marshalltown, eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents, his son James Russell in November of 1996, his granddaughter Nan Maxfield, and his brothers: Fred, Clifford, and Bill and his sisters: Mildred Airey and Alice Maxfield.
