Mortuary Record ______________________ James S. Hooton James S. Hooton was born in Kentucky Aug. 26, 1820. The matter of lineage was never a boast on the part of himself nor his family; yet it is not an upleasant fact to mention that James S. Hooton on his father’s side is a direct descendant of the old Houghton family of England, which family ranked among the highest nobility of the British realm. The part of that family that remained in America and were true to the colonies during the revolutionary war, lost their rank in the aristocracy of England, but not the nobility of character. On the maternal side, Mr. Hooton is a descendant of the Greens and Montgomerys of our earlier natural history. Mr. Hooton’s mother was a cousin to Gen. Green of revolutionary fame. James was born into a christian home. A benediction upon the cradle from Hime who is the father of our spirits and who is the giver of all good and perfect gift. It was also a home of christian song, the children were gifted with a faculty of song, James, Anna, William and mother enlivened their home with the songs of Zion. One especially a favorite of them was a hymn selected for the funeral occation, “How firm a foundation”. It is no marvel that from this home should go forth christian men and women. At the age of twenty-one James united with the old Christian church afterwards named the New Light church. In his primer manhood Bro. Hooton was a deacon in the church of his choice. After coming to New Carlisle to reside, he was superintendent of the M.E. Sunday school three years when that denomination worshiped in a school house standing where the residence of Mrs. Hubbard now stands. He loved the scriptures-the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus. A few years since he requested one of his daughters to purchase for himself a bible of large print; and since has read this sacred volume through four times and had almost completed a fifth reading, reading for the last time, the Sabbath before he died, the last chapter according to St. Luke. Mr. Hooton came to Indiana when he was three years of age, and to St. Joseph county, at the age of fifteen years. His residence has been in New Carlisle forty years. In the year 1845 he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Willfong, to this union was born eight children, four sons and four daughters, all present but one, William in the far west; to weep beside the casket that holds the mortal remains of their father. He is the first one of this family of ten members to be called, and now after the years have passed in which the children have all come to manhood and womanhood. “There is no union here of hearts that find not here an end.” But there is a long eternity of love for the good alone where the severed links may be reunited and the chain of love be golden and complete. May the emulation of ripened virtues, fidelity to truth and the kind offices of heaven make this actual as they constitute its joyous possibility. The elements of characterization in the instance of our deceased friend, father and brother are numerous. In the depths of his sensitive spirit he was capable of the sincerest gratitude. For a great number of years he had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He loved its tenets and gladly acknowledged the obligations of the mystic tie. In the years when reversed came, as they are so liable to come even to the strongest, the brethren came to his great assistance and secured for him and his family much for which he had worthily toiled. He went to his grave with the thought and feeling of gratitude in his heart to the brethren who on the square helped a mother’s son in hour of need. Bro. J.S. Hooton was an intelligent man, an incessant reader, an original thinker and discriminating in judgement on the great political, economical and philanthropical questions of the day. He was a fine conversationalist, conversing to edification on a great variety of subjects. He was a strong defender of the right. For his political party he was a warm and enthusiastic worker because he believed it to be right; but not, was he enthusiastic, for honors or any emoluments of office. Mr. Hooton possessed largely inventive genius. He invented and had patented a machine for steam heating which proved so beneficial that it is now in use all over the world in establishments of any importance. But he like very many inventors gave to the world the product of his brain, from which other men and arms grew wealthy while his remuneration was small. Father James Hooton had deep in his heart a love for home. This his sanctuary of soul-city of refuge and paradise of the heart. A large part of his busy life was consecrated upon the home altar. Their present home was the work of his own hands. He adored his children, and his grand-children were his chief delight, his deepest regret was that he had not been able to do more for his children. Bro. Hooton was remarkable and happy in a cheerful, forgiving disposition. He was good company for old and young, and always had a warm and pleasant greeting for all. One has so recently remarked: “How we will miss his kind words and pleasant greetings.” REV. GEO. R. STREETER. The funeral services where held at the Christian church, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. G. R. Streeter, of Winamac, Ind., officiating. Interrrment at the New Carlisle cemetery. A large number of relatives and friends were present at the obsequies. The floral tributes were elegant and profuse. The Terre Coupee F. & A. M. lodge had charge of the funeral. ______________________
