Description	:	James S. Hunter – Biography James S. Hunter, son of Adam and Cecelia (Smith) Hunter, was born in 1958 in Mercer County, Missouri. Adam Hunter was married in Scotland and had eight children. A few years after coming to Illinois in 1843, Adam’s first wife, Jeanette Dickie, and three of the children died of cholera, each within a few days. The children of the second marriage to Cecelia Smith were James S., Elizabeth (Mrs. Sy Funk), Mary (Mrs. John Eaton), and Jennie (Mrs. Henry D. Southworth). Hunter, son of Adam and Cecelia (Smith) Hunter, was born in 1958 in Mercer County, Missouri. Adam Hunter was married in Scotland and had eight children. A few years after coming to Illinois in 1843, Adam’s first wife, Jeanette Dickie, and three of the children died of cholera, each within a few days. The children of the second marriage to Cecelia Smith were James S., Elizabeth (Mrs. Sy Funk), Mary (Mrs. John Eaton), and Jennie (Mrs. Henry D. Southworth). In the early 1880’s, Jim Hunter and his mother, Cecelia, came to Nebraska and settled in the Riverview – now Pleasanton – area. In 1884 a store and jpost office and later a school were all parts of the early Hunter home. Jim and Cora Adams were married in 1888. Cora, daughter of John W. and Catherine (Forney) Adams, was born in 1868 in Jefferson County, Iowa. The first of three sons, Arthur, was born at Riverview. The young family and Jim’s mother were in Custer and Cherry Counties for a few years – about 1890 to 1895. They lived in sod houses on their homesteads. Cecelia also had a timber claim. She died in 1891 at Brownlee, and Jim took her back from Goose Creek to Missouri for burial. One of her daughters, Jennie Southworth, was still living in Harris, Sullivan County, Missouri. After Jennie died in 1894, her daughter Oae (Holtzinger) came to live with the Hunters. Her son Henry J. Southworth also came in 1900 after the death of his grandfather in Missouri. Two more sons were born to Jim and Cora. Cora died in 1915 and Jim in 1937. Both are buried at Pleasantan.
