Small at the U. B. church. Adam "Ed" Hunter was born in the County of Ayr, Scotland, May 16, 1839 and came to Macoupin County, Illinois by way of New Orleans up the Mississippi River in 1843 with his parents Adam and Janet Dickey Hunter. Ed was part of a family of six children. In July of 1849, Ed lost his mother, brother James, and sisters' Janet and Mary due to cholera. His father remarried and the family moved to Mercer County near Princeton. Ed had various jobs like prospecting for gold in the Rockies and managing the H3 Ranch on the Niobrara River owned by his brothers. He later helped his brother David at his ranch near Sutherland, Nebraska. Ed bought land south of Pleasanton in October of 1899. He planted trees and built a sod house on this land. This land was later owned by the Lloyd Lammers family. Ed sold his apples in the stores in Pleasanton. James Hunter, Mary Eaton, Jennie Southworth, and Elizabeth Funk were half-siblings of Ed Hunter in the Pleasanton area. One has only to read his letters and his poetry to see the beautiful soul of this man, who was known affectionately by all as "Uncle Ed". PLEASANTON ON THE LOUP, page 235 Adam Hunter by Ruth Southworth FROM AYR TO THURBER, by William Hunter McLean ------------------------------------------- Adam “Ed” Hunter was born in the County of Ayr, Scotland, May 16, 1939 and came to Macoupin County, Illinois with his parents, Adam and Jennette (Dickey) Hunter in 1843. From Illinois he moved with his parents to Missouri, near Princeton. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 he and his brother William joined their brother, Robert Dickey Hunter, in the Rockies to prospect for gold. In walking through the mountains in the winter he froze his feet and lost some of the bones in his toes. In the 1880’s he was foreman and manager of the H3 Ranch, on the Niobrara (Nebraska), owned by his brothers Robert, William and David. After the settlers started coming into that territory and the Hunter ranch was broken up, Ed filed a claim on property that had been their horse ranch. He gave dinner parties and had social evenings on his claim where the young farmers and cowboys met and had a good time. He sold his place on the Running Water in 1891 and went to help his brother David on his ranch at Sutherland (Nebraska). When Ed Hunter came to Pleasanton (Nebraska) isn’t known, but it must have been in the late 1890’s as he bought land south of Pleasanton in October 1899. He planted an orchard and built a sod house on his land. He also raised flowers and a garden. Earl Eaton remembers hauling apples to town for him. Margaret Downey remembers visiting him in the sod house and sitting in the windows with their wide sills. In From Ayr to Thurber, a book on the Hunter family, Ed is described as a “lovable, dear man who never married.” He was slightly hunchbacked, but he was one of nature’s noblemen. One has only to read his letters and his poetry to see the beautiful soul of this man, who was known affectionately by all as “Uncle Ed”. He died in 1917.
