James was born on July 30, 1912, in Sheridan Township, Cherokee County to Charles and Elizabeth (Lingle) Wilcox. He graduated from Cleghorn Consolidated Schools in 1930. He was married to Alta Birch on Aug. 28, 1932, at Cleghorn. He had farmed all his life retiring in 1994. He had been a resident of the Cleghorn area his entire life. He had been a member of the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church since 1925. He was a charter member of the CML Telephone Board and had served two terms on the Cleghorn Consolidated School Board. He is survived by: his wife Alta of Cleghorn; two daughters, Janice Abrahamson and her husband Richard of Primghar, Judith Olson of Spencer; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, James Dean Wilcox on Feb. 23,1996; and a brother Lawrence Wilcox in 1932. James & Alto celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1982. He served on the C-M-L Telephone Cooperative board for 14 years, 1963 -1977. They lived on the farm southeast of Cleghorn until moving into a home they built in Cleghorn in 1961. They belonged to the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church and were 57 year members when the church observed its centennial in 1982. James S. and Alta, their three children and three of their grandchildren graduated from the high school in Cleghorn, Cherokee Co., Iowa.
