Stephen Bethea, has cast a gloom of sorrow over the entire community. The body left Kansas City at 8 a.m. today and will arrive at Latta probably at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning when the funeral services will be conducted in the family burying ground. The members of Masonic lodges of Mullins and Latta will have charge of the services. Mr. Bethea left in the fall of 1914 for Prescott in the hope of benefiting his health, which showed marked improvement as result of the change during 13 years. It was not known here that his condition recently had become serious. In fact, two letters received by friends in Mullins Wednesday this week written last Saturday indicated that he was in his usual health. Mr. Bethea was the only son of the late D. McLeod Bethea and Annie Fore Bethea of Latta. His father left in 1920 for a visit to his son and died en route. His mother died in 1900. Mr. Bethea married Miss Pearl Norton, sister of B. B. Sellers, present member of House of Representatives. She was the adopted daughter of the late James Norton of Mullins, former congressman. They visited in Mullins and Latta on several occasions since moving to Arizona. Mr. Bethea is survived by his widow and three children, James Stephen Bethea, David McLeod Bethea and Rachel Florence Bethea; sisters, Mrs. George W. Dudley of Mullins, Mrs. J. C. Phillips of Prescott, Ariz., Mrs. E. L. Powell of Latta, Maurice Manning of Hendersonville, and one half sister, Mrs. Lee Hardaway of Louisville, Ky.; and by his step-mother, Mrs. D. McLeod Bethea of Latta. Published in The State, October 16, 1927 SELLERS - James Stephen Bethea, who died last Thursday at Prescott, Ariz., was buried at Latta Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. He moved to Arizona in 1913 on account of his health, which was greatly benefited. Mr. Bethea was a man of high ideals, energetic and ambitious. He attended Wofford College one year and was an honor graduate of the Citadel, the only son of D. McLeod Bethea who died in 1920. He married Miss Pearl Norton of Mullins. The funeral was held in the Methodist Church and conducted by the minister of the town. The Rev. W. C. Allen of Dillon who was reared in the community with Mr. Bethea, made appropriate remarks. The flowers were beautiful, attesting the esteem in which he was held. Published in The State, October 21, 1927
