Funeral services will be held on Tuesday October 11, 2016 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be on Monday October 10, 2016 from 5-7 PM at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in De Smet with a prayer service at 7 PM. Burial will be at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in De Smet. Osthus Funeral Home of De Smet is in charge of arrangements. James was born on May 31, 1927 to Andrew and Helen (Kazmerzak) Larson in Bryant, SD. He grew up in the Erwin, SD community where he graduated from high school in 1945 as valedictorian of his class. He farmed in the Erwin community until 1958 when he began working at the alfalfa plant in De Smet, where he would work until the age of 85. He was united in marriage to Elaine Doyle on November 21, 1949, she passed away in 2012. He belonged to St. Thomas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD and loved the time he was able to spend with is grandchildren. He had a passion for softball, playing and umpiring. He loved gardening, playing the harmonica and accordion, along with ice cream and flannel shirts. He is survived by his children Mike (Carol) Larson of Missoula, MT, Julie (Tom) Cossette of Maple Grove, MN, Jill (Roger) Teague of Phoenix, AZ, Jane (Bill) Barnett of Sioux Falls, SD, Jan Larson of De Smet, SD, Andrew (Kathy) Larson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Ryan (Marie) Larson of De Smet, SD, 9 grandchildren Tessa, Nathan, Betsy, Wally, Kelsey, Ashley, Aaron, Savannah, and Vincent and 1 great-grandchild, Madeline. James was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, Brothers George, Vincent, Lawrence, Bernard and Stanley, Sisters Gertrude and Margaret and one grandson Matthew. - Osthus Funeral Home
