This work was done as a memorial to the many Radford ancestors who contributed to America becoming the greatest nation in the world, until it went into moral decline after World War II. One thing is for certain, the land and mountains where they lived are beautiful, and my heart rejoices for them each time I am privileged to visit their homelands. To all my cousins who may read this data, Greetings!∼James Tazewell Radford was the progenitor of the Radfords who stayed in Franklin County. He and his wife Mary raised ten children, five boys and five girls. He started buying land from his Radford kin along Rugget Bagg Creek in Franklin County, but expanded up over the top of the mountain and down into what became Floyd County. His top of the mountain land straddled what became the Skyline Drive. Only one part of the his original land is still in the family. Eston Radford (1927), son of John William (1879-1933), son of Isaac (1848-1895), son of James Tazewell Radford Jr. (1821-1896), son of Joshua (1795-1864), who was the son of James Tazewell Radford senior, still lives near the place were the original Franklin County RADFORD was buried. But Eston has come to an age when his health will no longer allow him to do the hard work of raising cattle. Sadly, Eston may be the last to live on the land (Eston died in 2013, and is buried in the Vest Cemetery with his parents). James Tazewell's background is a mystery. His place of birth, his parents, and his wife are all challenges that have not yet been solved. He was buried on land on or near his top of the mountain properties. Several of his neighbors shared this now overgrown burial site. The Radfords, Underwoods, Gilaspy (now Gilespie), and maybe Janneys all lived and worshipped in that neighborhood. When I first heard of this cemetery thirty years ago the funerla home people told me it was called "The Old Radford Cemetery". Others call it Gillaspy or Underwood, it probably had no original name, but was the place were good friends were laid to rest, near the top of the Blue Ridge, where they once plowed the red clay dirt to make their livings.
