Although in his seventies, Powers is very active and is as capable of hard work as in his younger days. The janitor attributes his strength and agility to a "circle" which he describes as "hard work makes a hearty appetite and plenty to eat gives me health and strength necessary for my work." He says he is never ill. Powers has been a life-long citizen of Lancaster. He has always lived not more than four squares from his birthplace on Walnut-st. May 1st marked the 50th year he has resided at his present domicile, 326 E. Walnut-st., adjacent to the school. He attended the old South School building on the same site of the present structure. Railroader 21 Years His long record of employment stands as an example of reliability. Before assuming his present duties, Powers was a railroad worker for 21 years and held another position for a shorter time previous. Powers will be married 53 years on September 10th and he is proud of his household, deriving great satisfaction in reviewing how his conscientious labor and wise spending has helped make a happy home possible. Powers says "If I could not work, I would die" _________________________________________________ OBITUARY Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, 27 Sep 1939, Lancaster, OH James T. Powers, 79, retired care-taker of South School, where he served for 36 years, died at his home, 326 East Walnut st, at 3:40 a.m. today following an illness of two and half years. Mr. Powers, who was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and the first warden of the fraternal society, spent his entire life working and living within four blocks of his birthplace in West Walnut st. He was the son of Patrick and Mary Lockery Powers, early residents of Lancaster. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Powers and one son, Patrick Powers, Sr., of 125 West Allen st. Eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 9 a.m. from St. Mary's church and burial will follow in St. Mary's cemetery with James Sheridan in charge. Friends may call at the residence anytime after 6 p.m. today.
