In 1836 Mr. Ralph came to Shelbyville, Shelby county, buying lots through a friend, James Rider. He also built here the first frame house in the town. It was at Quincy that Mr. R. married a second time, a widow, whose maiden name was Moore. She, however, scarcely survived the honeymoon, and February 14, 1840, he was wedded to Miss Emeline Dines, sister to Tyson and Joseph Dines. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph have no children, but have an adopted daughter. Miss Emma Dines by name. She is a neice [sic] of Mrs. R. Mr. Ralph tried successively carpentering, farming and merchandising before he embarked in his present business. He has now been for 19 years dealing in lumber, and trades a little in real estate. He keeps a shop in which he works just enough to employ his leisure hours. In politics Mr. Ralph is a Democrat, though he has always held himself aloof from the broils and turmoils of political life. He never ran for any office, but has lived quietly at home, an honest, law-abiding citizen and an exemplary domestic man. He and his wife are members of the M. E. Church South, his membership dating back over 50 years. E. church, South, in this city, on Friday, May 4, 1894, at 2:30 P.M. Services conducted by Rev. J. S. Todd. Burial at Odd Fellows' Cemetery. Born May 15, 1807; died May 3, 1894. Age 86 years, 11 months and 12 days. James Ralph died at his home in Shelbyville, May 2 (sic), aged 87 years. He was the oldest man in Shelby county. In 1835 he located in Quincy, Illinois, and it is said to be of local history that Mr. Ralph erected the first frame building in the town. In 1836 he moved to Shelbyville and in 1840 married Miss Emma Dines, survives him. Mr. Ralph was a resident of Shelbyville 58 years and for 66 years a most exemplary and useful member of the Methodist church. The funeral services were conducted by his old time friends, Revs. J. T. Todd and W. W. McMurry. An exemplary citizen in life his good deeds will live as a monument to his memory now that he has paid the debt of nature and joined the silent majority.
