Dakota, May 27, 1901, of consumption. Verde and his sister went to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1898 and while visiting in that city he contracted a severe cold presumably from the lake breezes and from which he never recovered. In the same year he went to Uvalda, Texas, for his health and stayed there until March, 1899, when he returned home. He was then quite poorly and it was evident he was suffering from lung trouble. Some physicians advised him to at once go west and others said he could be cured at home. In the same month he returned from Texas he went to Iowa City and had an operation performed, and while it seemed to be successful yet the wound never healed up. Last August Verde went to Spearfish, S. Dakota, and camped out for his health which was then very poor and when he left our people were satisfied that it would be his last journey save that journey which we must all sooner or later make to the grave. He seemed to improve soon after reaching Dakota and the letters he wrote home were always hopeful of eventual recovery and a letter received in Arlington by one of his dear friends only a week or two before death ended his troubles said he was getting better. Last March he contracted the grip and from that time on the end came rapidly. About ten days before he died he and his mother, who had been caring for her son for several months, drove to Spearfish. He thought he would recover and after his father arrived a few days before his death he still clung to the dearest of all gifts, life, and laid plans for the future. He passed away in the tent in which he was camping at 3:45 a.m., May 27. His end was like falling asleep, although he had suffered severely for several weeks. His body was taken to the home of Grant Ainsworth in Spearfish where it was prepared for the journey homeward which was begun Tuesday morning, May 28. The body arrived in Arlington Thursday morning at 10 o'clock and the funeral services were at once held in the Christian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mattox. Verde became a member of the Christian Church in December, 1892, and lived a consistent Christian life until the moment of his departure. Mr. Truesdell wishes us to express the heartfelt thanks of himself and family for the great kindness shown them by the G.A.R. and citizens and neighbors of Arlington and vicinity and at Spearfish, South Dakota, during the long sickness of his son Verde and after his death.
