Description	:	JAMES VINCENT BAILEY was born in England in 1848. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada when he was about 12 as a woodsman. He married Mary Hull from Wales. They lived in Iowa briefly and then moved to Jerauld County, South Dakota near Crow Lake where they farmed and raised one crop for five years. The ground was very rocky. The stock had gone to the creek... Read More	JAMES VINCENT BAILEY was born in England in 1848. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada when he was about 12 as a woodsman. He married Mary Hull from Wales. They lived in Iowa briefly and then moved to Jerauld County, South Dakota near Crow Lake where they farmed and raised one crop for five years. The ground was very rocky. His close neighbors were August Kappelman and the Fricks. He lived here when the blizzard of January 12, 1888 struck. The day had started warm and calm. The snow had begun to melt. The stock had gone to the creek to drink. The wind turned to the northwest and the temperature started to drop. The storm hit to fast the stock never returned. Children were caught in school. They tied ropes around their waists to cross a road 100 feet away to the Kapplemann house. They were lucky and made it, but many teachers and pupils lost their lives. In the fall of 1891, they homesteaded in Gregory County in order to be near the Kappelman's. They thought it was truly a land of plenty with blue grass as tall as a horse's back. They found trees and wild fruit in abundance. Fencing was easy because of the many trees. These could also be used to make corrals and sheds. They had brought their one room house 16 ft. by 18 ft. on a flat boat. The man that ran the boat was Benny Reynolds. The biggest task was getting the house up the river hill. The first thing they did was dig a rock well. It was hard water but plenty of it. It was a task to wash clothes in it. The water was drawn by a windlass and a bucket and rope. We worked the land with oxen and horses. The land had been military land that had not been surveyed. Trading could be done then at the Gaughen Store about two miles away. There was a little store also on the north side of Wheeler, which was the county seat. Travel was done by buggy and team or saddle horses. The main crops were wheat and corn. They also raised garden products. For years Dad took wheat to Atkinson to have it ground. Two of the older children were sent there several months of each year to school. He told of camping out when he would take them and of the fleas that would come from the sand and bite them. Many of the wagon trails of the early settlers can still be seen today north of Bonesteel. Especially the one from Fairfax to the Missouri and the ferry boat. The Indians, military and cattlemen all used the trail. The first school was built in 1903, one and one-half miles west of the homestead. On the board were Fritz Handt, George Sazalt, and Benjamin Solomon. Other neighbors were Gingery, Lazotte, Stafford, Dietricks, and Maggrett. There was little time for hobbies, but they did enjoy playing checkers and riding horseback. Doctors were few. Ernest, the oldest son, went for a doctor when I was born. He was in a storm ten miles from Atkinson and almost lost his life. A neighbor's wife had come in as they helped each other. The children were Ernest, Ethel, dec. infant, Edith, Earl, Eben, Elvin, Erwin and Esli. In 1910 the family moved 1 1/2 miles west of the original homestead. The house that was built is where I was raised and raised my family and where my son Edgar now lives. His son recently brought home a buffalo skull from the pasture where one still finds arrow heads. This land is six miles north of Bonesteel has seen history in the making.
