James' death certificate also gave the place he was to be buried as the Iowa Soldiers' Home Cemetery, but he is buried here in Shaul. James married Elizabeth A. (Headley) McFarlin [sic] on April 5, 1866 in Wapello County, Iowa. After her death, he married Jennie Foster on December 21, 1926, in Marshall County, Iowa. That marriage was shown as both James' and Jennie's third marriage. ------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Saturday, July 20, 1929: LOCAL CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS SUMMONED James J. [sic] Davis, veteran of the Civil war and a resident of Ottumwa for nearly twenty-five years, died Friday night at the soldiers’ home in Marshalltown, according to word received here by relatives. Mr. Davis, who was about 93 [sic] years old, was well known here. With Mrs. Davis he left in 1917 and took up his residence at the Marshalltown institution. During the war he served with Company D, Nineteenth Indiana regiment. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife and three grandchildren, William Headley and Mrs. Myrtle Farrington of Ottumwa and Mrs. Iva Freed of Des Moines. The body will arrive in Ottumwa today and funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the Lester Jay funeral chapel. Burial is to be made in Shaul cemetery.
