Hart, one of the oldest if not the oldest citizens of this city, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. S. Peck in this city. His demise came not unexpected, as the aged pioneer had been suffering of the ills due to his advanced age for some time. It was only his remarkable physique that withstood the advances of decrepitude so long. Departed was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., Oct 23, 1819, he was therefore eighty-nine years, eight months, and nine days old at his death. Having removed to Stark county, O., he was married there February 11, 1841, to Miss Rebecca Pearson. He was elected sheriff of Stark county and was one of that county's foremost citizens. While residing in Stark county, death bereaved him of two children whose remains rest in the cemetery of Bunker Hill M. E. church. They removed to Elkhart county, Indiana, about 1854 where departed followed his trade, that of a carpenter. He held a high place in the community and became postmaster of Fish Lake, P.O. and also served as justice of the peace. The beloved wife died in 1868 and rests in the cemetery of Haw Patch M. E. church, Nobles County, Indiana. The bereaved husband cared for his eight motherless children under all the difficulties such a task involves, and to better their chances came to this city as one of the pioneers of 1870, where he and his sons became the foremost mechanics. He remained here ever since, and in his declining years had the tender care of his daughters, assisted by his sons, who sought to reward by filial affection him who had so industriously and faithfully labored for them and reared them to honorable man and womanhood. The funeral at 2:30 o'clock Sunday was conducted by Rev. J. W. Taylor of the M. E. church, to which denomination departed had belonged since early in life. Of the eight children suriving him there were present the following: Architect S. P. Hart, Mrs. W. S. Peck, aforesaid and Mrs. Geo. Guy, Carroll; H. E. Hart Laurens, Iowa; Mrs. Calvin Chase and husband, Marathon, Iowa: O. D. Hart of Deadwood, S. D. was too ill to come, but Mrs. Hart attended the funeral. W. E. Hart, state of Oregon, could not get here on account of distance. James W. Hart was a rugged specimen of the physically powerful and hardened pioneer. He was a hardworking, industrious, sober and upright citizen. In politis he was a consistent democrat of the old school, but always patriotic and interested in the progress and welfare of this country. He was a kind-hearted man and was liked by all who knew him. His presence on the streets was always greeted with a kindly handshake and greeting from the many friends. Living to a hale old age, with a family of worthy sons and daughters to perpetuate his name and take his place as exteemed citizens of their communities, James W. Hart had well fulfilled his mission of life. We note his departure with regret, but hope that he has gone to a better life, where earth's trials and sufferings are succeeded by eternal joys. ----------------------------------------- NOTE: Son, Burget L.
