Sand James William Sand, of Lincoln died on Monday, July 23, 2007 at Tabitha under Hospice care in Lincoln at the age of 57 years 8 months and 26 days following several years of health concerns. He was born on October 27, 1949 to William and Leona (Ouellette) Sand at Beatrice, Nebraska, the oldest of three children. As a young boy he attended school at Exeter and graduated from Friend High School with the Class of 1968. He attended Iowa Community College in Council Bluffs earning his Associate Degree in Graphic Arts. Completing his college education, James worked for a time in Colorado before returning to Nebraska where he was employed by Bryan Hospital until his health begin to fail. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lincoln, formerly a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Friend. He was an avid Husker fan enjoying both football and basketball and enjoyed playing pool as a hobby and participated in several tournaments. James had a very positive outlook and after he became too ill to work full time, he enjoyed volunteering at Bryan. As he moved a patient to surgery, he always would offer encouragement to them. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Leona Sand, Friend, daughter, Shelia Velasquez and family, Evans, CO, brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Kim Sand, El Paso, TX, sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Shawn St. Louis, Friend, nieces, Michelle Sand and Angie Lopez and family, El Paso, TX, Jessica St. Louis, Friend, nephew, Tyler, St. Louis, Friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Hendrickson Sand. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend with Fr. David Bourek officiating. Rosary will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery, Silver Creek, Nebraska at 2:30 pm. Memorials have been established to Volunteer Resources in care of Bryan LGH Foundation and to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Friend. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend.
