Powers, an early settler in this vicinity, died at his home ten miles north of this city, Monday morning about half past two o’clock from injuries received by a fall from a load of slough grass. The circumstances of the accident, which occurred Saturday afternoon between four and five o’clock are as follows: Mr. Powers in company with his cousin, Harvey Stanford of Aledo, Illinois, who was visiting him, had been after a load of wood and in returning to the house had stopped to cover some apples. Mr. Powers and Mr. Stanford were riding on top of the load until they reached the place where they were to throw off the hay, when Mr. Stanford alighted to receive the grass while Mr. Powers remainder on the wage to throw it down to him. In order to drive around a tree or stump, Mr. Stanford had gone ahed to pick out a way, when looking back, he discovered his cousin had slipped and fallen from the wagon. He rushed back to find Mr. Powers lying on his face unconscious. He turned him over, spoke to him and receiving no answer hurried to the house to summon aid. The injured man was carried in and medical aid was enlisted. It was found that he had sustained a broken nose, fractured his left arm and broken the little finger of his right hand, when he regained consciousness he told how the bad accident had happened. Al that night and Sunday his family watched by his bedside and did everything possible to alleviate his suffering, oscillating between hope and despair until at the last the end came. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Holmes Chapel, conducted by Rev. J. G. Duling of Grant. Interment was made in the Villisca Cemetery. Mr. Powers was born in Highland County, Ohio, July 17, 1841. He moved to Iowa in 1870 and had lived in this vicinity continuously from that time till his death. On January 25, 1872 he married Miss Victoria Higgins, whose father was one of the first settlers in this section of the country. To Mr. and Mrs. Powers seven children were born, five of whom are still living, H. A., Clinton, and Miss Ethel of Villisca, Mrs. Zettie Trublood of Red Oak, and Miss Vivian of Meeteese, Wyoming. Mrs. Powers also survives. The accident which resulted in the death of Mr. Powers was the second one he had encountered in a week, the first occurring the Sunday before as he was returning from services at the Holmes Church. On that occasion the front wheels of his buggy were pulled out and he was thrown to the ground breaking a rib and injuring his side. It is probable that Mr. Powers’ fall Saturday was due mainly to his inability to get around as well as usual on account of his previous injury.
