Description	:	Vacslav Šebek was born 17 November 1857 in Vranovice, Rokycany, Plzensky (Plzen), Czech Republic to Matej Šebek and Marie Vodičková. He was the couple's fourth son and their youngest child. Sadly, in April of 1857 the family lost their third son, Vacslav (born in 1855), and that is who he was named after when he was born. Sadly, in April of 1857 the family lost their third son, Vacslav (born in 1855), and that is who he was named after when he was born. On 27 October 1879, he married the love of his life, Anna Štembrová, there in Vranovice. She was the daughter of Frantisek Štembra and Marie Ulcová. The couple was blessed with their first child, Marie Šebek, on 8 March 1880 while still living in Vranovice. Marie was the only child born to this couple while still living in the "old country". Not too long after their daughter's birth, the couple immigrated to the United States--census records state sometime around 1881--and they settled in Iowa. After their immigration to America, the family Anglicized their names and were known as James Wesley Shebeck and Anna Mary (Stembra) Shebeck and Mary Josephine Shebeck thereafter. James was a miner his entire life. It is unclear as to what kind of miner he was before his immigration to America, but after settling in Iowa he became a coal miner. He continued this occupation--working for various coal mining companies in and around the Des Moines, Iowa area--until his retirement. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America organization. James and Anna had at least seven more children after settling in Iowa. They include: John Andrew (b. 7 May 1882; d. 9 May 1938), Anna (b. 28 Oct 1883; d. 2 Jul 1964), two infants (b. aft 1885; d. bef 1900), Franklin Jacob "Frank" (b. 30 Dec 1887; d. 17 Sep 1971), Rose Elizabeth "Rosie" (b. 9 Jan 1890; d. 3 Oct 1970) and Joseph Edward "Joe" (b. 1 Apr 1893; d. 1945). On 8 June 1913 his wife, Anna Mary (Stembra) Shebeck, passed away at the family's home after an illness of just over 3 months long. She is buried in the St. Ambrose Cemetery there in Des Moines. James married for a second time to Anna Frances "Annie" (Vavrová) Chelact on 19 January 1914 in Des Moines. She was the daughter of Frantisek and Anna (Shtoaková) Vavra. Just under two years later, on 22 December 1915, James was granted a divorce from Anna. Despite the causes for their divorce, the couple remarried on 28 November 1922 in Des Moines and remained married until Anna's untimely death on 17 August 1929. She was laid to rest next to her first husband in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines--the grave is unmarked (confirmed by cemetery office records). James and Anna had no children born to their union. On 9 April 1930 James married again in Des Moines. This time to Anna (Shandová) Melichar. She was the daughter of Josef and Anna (Kroleshová) Shanda, as well as the widow of Lukas Melichar. No children were born to this union. They enjoyed nearly eight years of wedded bliss before Anna suddenly passed away on 11 Jan 1938 at the couple's home. She was interred next to her first husband at the Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. James married for a final time to Julia Etta (Thompson) Starling Hook on 18 Aug 1938. The circumstances surrounding the couple's marriage were "strange" enough (for the time it happened in, anyway) to make headlines all across the state--and even in at least one of the surrounding states! After the death of his wife, Anna (Shandová) Melichar Shebeck, James took out a "Women Wanted" advertisement in the local newspaper. He was simply looking for someone to cook and clean for him but instead the two quickly fell in love and married after a very brief courtship of only 19 days! In May of 1943, Julia passed away and was subsequently laid to rest next to her second husband, Anson N Hook, in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. James eventually moved into his son Frank's home in Des Moines and passed away there on 31 July 1947. His funeral took place on 2 August 1947 and he was subsequently laid to rest in the St. Ambrose Cemetery in Des Moines--presumably next to his first wife, Anna Mary (Stembra) Shebeck.
