Pauline Snow THE DEATH OF JAMES WHITE, TREASURER OF WILLIAMS COLLEGE His Useful Work for That Institution and the Town of Williamstown Williams College and Williamstown suffer a serious loss in the death of James White, treasurer of the college, who died yesterday morning at the age of 67 years. Mr White had been in declining health for three years, but of late had rapidly lost ground. His disease for a time baffled the doctors, but some time ago it was decided to be cancer of the stomach. The funeral will be held from the house at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, Rev. William Slade of the Congregational church officiating. The burial will be in the family lot in Hinsdale. Mr White had lived in Williamstown for nine years, when he was called to succeed the late Joseph White, long secretary of the state board of education, in the care of the finances of the institution. He brought to this work exact methods and the intelligent oversight which belong to a successful man of business, and had no small part in producing those results on the material side which have marked the administration of President Carter. The need for his work was urgent and he gave it with the utmost fidelity. It was a loving service, worth the doing and well performed. In all the affairs of the town and of the Congregational church he was active and potential, coming at a time when the death of strong men had mand the entrance of Mr White of more than usual value. His going will be all the more a loss. All this serves to indicate in some degree the way this faithful treasurer and active citizen will be missed from the most useful place which he had made for himself. Mr White was a native of Berkshire and a graduate of Williams. He was born at Hinsdale July 9, 1828, the son of Joseph and Sophia H White. He was descended from Perigrine White, the first male child born to the Pilgrims after their arrival off the Massachusetts coast, and he possessed virtues characteristic of his ancestry. At the age of 15 James White entered Williamston Seminary in Easthampton, from which he was graduated in 1847. He entered Williams college the same year. Mr White was determined to study for the ministry, a decision that molded and broadened his whole after life. He did hard work in college, took great interest in debating, and represented the Philologian society in the first public debate with the Philotechians, which occurred in the fall of 1850. One of his supporters in that debate was A.L.Perry, then a junior, and in after years Mr White's associate at Williams college. Mr White was graduated in 1851, when he delivered the classical oration. He then taught for two years in Williston seminary, and in the fall of 1853 entered Andover theological seminary. After about 16 months he was compelled to discontinue his studies on account from his eyes from which he had never fully recovered. Mr White went to Boston early in 1855, and was at once employed as a salesman in White, Brown & Davis' dry goods house, his brother being a member of that firm. Mr White's business qualifications were soon recognized, and he was steadily promoted until in 1864 he was made a partner in the new firm of White, Brown & Co. Mr White's business career extended over a period of 20 years, and he became one of the best known business men of Boston. He gave much energy to church work and was for years a leading member of the Central Congregational church of Boston, and one of its deacons. He was also greatly interested as a republican in local politics and rarely missed his party's primaries, and never his vote. In 1874 Mr White retired from active business. In 1876 he was chosen a representative in the Legislature, and re-elected by a still larger majority the following year. In 1878 and 1879 he served in the Senate, where he did valuable work. Mr White retired from politics in 1879, and from then until 1886, when he was chose treasurer of his almamater, devoted himself wholly to his home and to church work. During his residence in Williamstown Mr White exhibited great interest in town affairs, and was for years town moderator at the town elections. He was recognized as a public-spirited citizen, and was consulted on many questions of local importance. He was several times chosen president of the Williamstown national bank. Mr White served as trustee of Williams college for three terms. The Delta Upsilon society owes its new commodious home largely to his efforts. Mr White was married in 1856 to Miss Harriet Cornelia, daughter of Dr and Mrs B F Kittredge of Hinsdale, who survives him, with two children, Franklin Kittredge White, Williams, '90, who is now engaged in business in Boston, and Miss Lizzie Davis White, who was graduated at Wellesley in 1881.
