He and his twin brother, Benjamin, being the only sons to reach maturity, remained on the homestead together for about thirty years, sharing the work and the responsibilities. They so closely resembled one another in appearance that neighbors found difficulty in recognizing one from the other. The brothers also possessed similar traits of character, both being men of recognized ability and probity. Joseph kept also for six months the hotel in the center of town. He remained in Goshen until the spring of 1828, when he moved to Hinsdale, Massachusetts. There he bought one of the best farms and with sound judgment and economy, aided by a wife who shouldered her full share, he became one of the most prosperous famers in the section. His leisure hours were devoted to scholarly pursuits. He was an extensive reader, well versed in the Scriptures, alert mentally to every worthwhile issue of life. His church knew him for a devoted and zealous adherent. He became a communicant early in life of the Congregation Church and remained an honored member to the end of his days. His interest in educational matters made itself felt, not only in his own home, but in the township and his prominence in town affairs rebounded to the benefit of the community. Joseph White was known as a devoted father who gladly made sacrifices that his children be well prepared for successful careers in life.
