Description	:	James Whittleton, age 65, was the third man killed at Chelan Falls by the Great Northern passenger train within the past two months. James Whittleton was killed instantly the afternoon of August 6, when he was crushed between the car in which he had been riding previously and the up-river passenger train at the lower Chelan Falls crossing just two months earlier, the same train at the upper Chelan Falls crossing struck a motor and killed Frank Spurgeon and Jake Maureau. James Whittleton was killed instantly the afternoon of August 6, when he was crushed between the car in which he had been riding previously and the up-river passenger train at the lower Chelan Falls crossing just two months earlier, the same train at the upper Chelan Falls crossing struck a motor and killed Frank Spurgeon and Jake Maureau. Forest Beckman and Mr. Whittleton employees of the Renn Fruit Co. had quit work about 5 o'clock and were driving home. Mr. Beckman was driving the auto, which was a Ford touring car. As they drew close to the railroad crossing they saw the train, which was reported to have whistled and the bell sounded. Mr. Beckman stopped the car but fearing that he was too close to the track, swung the car to as to be partially parallel to the track. Whittleton at this time fearing that the train might hit the car, jumped out of the car on his side, which was next to the train. Before he could get out from the end of the auto, the train engine struck the front right fender and radiator, which swung the auto around, knocking Mr. Whittleton against the passing train. The skull of the deceased was badly crushed, and one arm injured. The driver, Mr. Beckman was not hurt at all, and the car was only slightly damaged. Funeral services were held at the grave in the Chelan cemetery, Sunday, Rev. Miller of Manson officiating. Mr. Whittleton came to the state of Washington about 45 years ago, making his home in Seattle. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, The Buffalo at Seattle, the Eagle Lodge of Carnation, Wash. The deceased leaves to mourn his death, his wife Mrs. Martha Whittleton. Two officials of the Great Northern including the G. N. claim agent and an official photographer were at Chelan Falls viewing the rite of the accident and checking up on the details of the tragedy. The railroad company takes pictures of each crossing where such accident occurs, it is understood.
