They raised turkeys on the farm and sold them at Thanksgiving time. He cut his finger and got blood poisining so had to have part of it amputated. Dr. Baskett cut it off. This was in 1924 when Uncle Bob was 1 year old. He used to tease his children and grandchildren saying "what did you do with my finger:. He never slapped or spanked his children, only scolded them when they needed it. He would tease them with a spanking but then would just laugh about it. His children always called him Papa. Later on Dr. Mabius in Billings took out one of his kidneys. No information on that. When the bank crash happened in 1929 Grandpa had to sell off his livestock. He took any job he could get - sheepherder, gas station attendant. They lived up the Boulder when Mom was in the 7th & 8th grades. They had to walk to school which was a 2 mile walk. Only high school was in town. Mom was the only one of the 6 kids to graduate from high school. He had to leave the farm eventually and rented a house next to the creamery. I remember when he was the gas station attendant at the Conoco Station in Big Timber. We, grandkids, would go visit him and he would always buy us a soda pop. 5 cents, but a rarity for us. He was a wonderful grandfather who dearly loved all his grandkids and they all loved him. it was a blow to the entire family when he passed away after stomach surgery in April 1950. I was 12 years old as was Lois and we were downtown after school when a lady (who neither was of could remember who) told us she was so sorry about his death. We both cryed all the way home and when I got home all the sisters were at our house. Aunt Eva quickly called Henry to get Lois and bring her. The moms were really upset that someone had told us before out parents could. : Big Timber Pioneer, April 13, 1950 James William Bourne, 73, passed away last Thursday afternoon at the Lott hospital in Livingston. He had undergone a major operation the day before. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Evangelical United Brethren church, with Rev. Roukema of Columbus officiating, assisted by Rev. F. E. Wines. Lowry's was in charge of arrangements. Music was by Mrs. Ralph Ryan, Mrs. Vernie Hathaway, and L. A. Westervelt. Pallbearers were E. A. Bieber, W. G. Robinson, Guy and Gerritt Scholten, John Huyser and Herb Walton. Burial was in Mountain View beside his wife who preceded him in death in 1931. Mr. Bourne was born June 10, 1876, in Kent county, England. At the age of 21, he came to Canada and after two years to the United States. He worked for several years on ranches in Montana and Wyoming. He was married to Ida May Boyer on Sept. 7, 1909, in Billings. To them were born six children, all of whom survive: Mrs. Cecil Valgamore, James Bourne Jr., and Mrs. Howard Huyser, all of Big Timber; Mrs. Harold Meisel of Amboy, Wash., Mrs. Paul Hancock of Lincoln, Nebr., and Robert S. Bourne of Santa Paula, Calif. All were her for the services. Mr. Bourne was engaged in ranching near Custer until 1918 when he brought his family to Big Timber. He continued ranching here until 1933. Since 1942, he had been employed at the Continental Oil Co. and Chevron station until he retired in September 1949.
