Read More	Alexandria (NE) Argus, 19 Oct 1939: Funeral Services Held for James Burt--Meets Death in Auto Accident near Ada, Minnesota James William Burt, the son of Charles N. and Jennie May Burt, was born at Ohiowa, Nebr., August 17, 1914 and departed this life as the result of an automobile accident at Ada, Minn., Oct. 7, 1939, at the age of 25 years, 1 month and 20 days. His boyhood days were spent near Ohiowa; he was a graduate of the Ohiowa high school in the class of 1932. He had many friends among his classmates in the community. He joined the Methodist church at an early age and was a regular attendant in his boyhood. In 1935 the family moved to a farm near Alexandria. Later he spent two years in North Dakota working on a ranch. In June, 1936 he joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 4th infantry, Co. 1, stationed at Fort Lincoln, Bixmark, North Dakota. He enjoyed army training and camp life and became an expert marksman, receiving several medals for fine marksmanship. At various times he had been sent to different locations, but at the time of his death he was stationed at Fort Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his mother, who passed away March 14, 1929; his sister Rose, who died at the age of 14 years and one sister and one brother who died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his passing, his father, Chas. N. Burt of Alexandria; his sisters - Mrs. Thelma Gewecke of Ohiowa, Mrs. Faye Vostrez and Mrs. Mina Long of Alexandria, Mrs. Mary Vostrez of Tobias, Miss Dorothy Burt of Lincoln and Mrs. Maude Lutz of Fairbury; three brothers--Arthur of Fresno, Calif., George and Charles, Jr. of Alexandria. Two nieces and four nephews, many other relatives and a host of friends both here and in North Dakota. James' body was shipped to Fairmont, from where the I.C. Steele ambulance took him to his father's home, near Alexandria. A short service here preceded the funeral service held from the Methodist Episcopal church at Ohiowa, with the pastor Rev. S.G. Rasmusson officiating. Max Garland, Mrs. W.H. Hinkle, Geneva; Mrs. I.C. Steele and Gordon Rasmusson furnished the music, sining "In the Sweet By and By" and ****(missing)***(missing) pallbearers: H. Silvey, Don Luttich, Howard Marks, Willard Lapcheska, Wesley Cradduck and Wayne Garrison. Honorary pallbearers were the American Legion and one Civil War veteran, R.W. Stowell. Mrs. B.N. Luttich and Dorothy Stowell were in charge of the floral offerings, rich in profusion and color. Interment at the Ohiowa cemetery. Accompanying the body of James was an intimate friend of the deceased, an army pal, Charles Gnadt. The two young men, Mr. Gnadt's sister and two other lady friends were enroute to Mr. Gnadt's parental home at Ada, Minn., where monthly visits were taken by the young men, and sometimes more frequent. The young folks were within fifteen miles of the Gnadt home, when the tragedy occurred. James, the driver, struck a truck from the rear, swiping it, being fatal to James, who died instantly from head injuries. No blame was laid onto James, the accident thought to be caused by glaring light interference. Two ladies in Mr. Burt's car received injuries; these with the other occupants being fortunate to save their lives. C.N. Burt and his family had not seen James for two years. Mr. Gnadt unfolded James' plans to come home shortly for a visit. Mr. Gnadt to come with him. This was the sad part of James' life chapter; he came but silence reigned, his soul had departed. Military services were held at the camp before sending the body to his home. James would have soon become a Lieutenant in the army. Near relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Lutz and Mrs. Carl Lutz of Fairbury, Joe and Mrs. I.L. Burt and Miss Dorothy Burt of Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Breitfelder of Mt. Claire, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Ora Chaney and Mrs. Mary Burt of Geneva, and Mr. and Mrs. Lennie Frankforter of Tobias. There were friends from neighboring towns. The church was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives.
