His remains were brought to this city and interred in the Maple Grove cemetery Dec 8th. An obituary notice will be published next week. Dec 17, 1898 Obituary James W. Ellis was born in Berkeley Co. Va., Aug 8, 1834. At the age of 11 years he, with his parents, moved to Champaign Co., Ohio. In 1856 he was married to Miss Ann Florence Neer, with whom he lived until his death. In 1868 he, with his family, moved to Allen County, Kansas, having purchased a farm two miles east of Humboldt. In 1882 he moved his family to Attica, Harper county, Kansas, where he resided until 1893, having acquired a claim in the Strip, near Jefferson, at the time of the opening of that land. He decided late in that year to move his family to the claim, which has since been their home. He had not been in his usual health for several weeks, but did not take to his bed until a week before his death. At that time a physician was called and, although he was suffering a great deal with his stomach, the physician thought he would soon be up again, but after three or four days found the case to be much more serious, yet did not realize until Sunday (the day he died) that he was so near death's door. Telegrams were sent to each of his children but only two, D. C. Ellis, of Humboldt, and Myrtle M. Ellis, of Jacksonville, Ill., were able to go immediately to him, but arrived too late to see their father alive, he having passed away at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4th. He had complained at different times for the last two years of a burning sensation of the bowels, and at times suffered some pain, but never knew what was the cause. On examination after his death a large cancer was found in the bowels. He was a soldier in the Civil War with the 134th Ohio Infantry, and was a member of the G.A.R. He has been a devoted Christian nearly all his life, having at the age of 18 years united with the U.B. church at Salem, Ohio. The funeral was preached at the home Dec. 6th, at 3 p.m., by the Presbyterian pastor of Jefferson, Okla. His remains were accompanied to this city by his wife and laid to rest by the side of two of their children in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
