James W. Perdue, eldest of 11 children, was born to Christopher and Nancy Perdue May 18, 1867, near Woodburn, Clarke County, Iowa. He departed this life at the Oak Knoll nursing home in Des Moines, Iowa August 6, 1947 at the age of 80 years, two months and 18 days. His father and mother preceded him in death several years ago; also a sister passing in infancy, a brother, Edd, about three years ago, and his sister, Susie, just two weeks previously. He grew to manhood in Clarke county and was united In marriage to Mary A. Smith, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Smith, on July 9, 1892. Mary passed away November 23, 1908. To them were born seven children. One died In infancy and Chris, the eldest son, met his death by accident in 1941. Another son, Charley, died some ten years ago. The remaining children, left to mourn his departure are: Mrs Daisy Blair of Ames, Mrs. Tom Blair of Ankeny, Mrs. Ina Page of Osceola, Glen of Cumming, fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank, Giles and Dan of Des Moines; four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Jackson of Jefferson, Mrs Mary Millard of Des Moines, Mrs Martha Wiley of Burlington and Mrs. Jessie Nicholson of Creston. Jim was an energetic farmer, and left with six motherless children at an early age, ho continued farming and reared the children to maturity. The youngest, Glen, one and a half at the time of his mother's passing, was cared for by his Grandmother Smith. Jim spent most of his life in Clarke county, with the exception of the last years of his life, they being spent in the homes of his daughters, Daisy and Murl, in Polk county, where he was tenderly cared for after suffering a stroke in the spring of 1937. One year ago he was taken to the nursing home. He bore his sorrows courageously, was always ready in the time of need and lived his life by the Golden Rule. In Memory of James W.
