Simon, 81, who died Saturday evening, Nov. 21, 2009 at the Avera Heart Hospital, following a brief illness. Officiating during the service was the Rev. Hugh Brewer. Pallbearers were Don Jones, Bob Fylling, Arlyn Thomas, Ken Sayler, Ryan Renz, Will Simon, and Corbin Simon. Interment was held in the Lennox Cemetery. James William Simon was born at Lennox, SD on May 3, 1928 to William F. and Laura (Dent) Simon. He grew up in Lennox, graduating from Lennox High School in 1947. He attended Augustana College for two years. In 1951 he entered the U.S. Army and served in Austria during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1953. After his return to Lennox, he married Evelyn Mae Grayson on June 1, 1956, after the two were introduced by their parents. Together, they raised four children, Lorie, Mike, Cherie and Dan. With his father, he operated the W.F. Simon and Son Insurance Agency. In 1968, he and Evelyn purchased the business and it became Simon Insurance and Tax Service, which they owned and operated for many years. The business was a fixture on Main Street in Lennox, and even after a extensive fire in 1976, they rebuilt and remained in the same location. They fully retired in 1997 and enjoyed traveling. Evelyn died on October 3, 2003. Jim was an active member of the Lennox community. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. Jim loved music, and was very involved with the Lennox Municipal Band for over 40 years, where he played baritone, and served as emcee and president. He also loved to listen to classical music. Besides his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, DeLora Jones and Phyllis Sandidge. Grateful for having shared his life are his four children and five grandchildren: Lorie Callison, Mesa, AZ and her daughters, Emily and Katie, Michael Simon and his wife, Sally of Sioux Falls, SD and their son, Corbin, Cherie Mace and her husband, Bill, Kennewick, WA and Daniel Simon and his wife Marg of Lennox, SD andtheir children, Will and Grace; two sisters: Eileen Rogers, Rapid City, SD and Joan Me Coppin, Loveland, CO; brother-in-law Roy Grayson and his wife Diane, Worthing, SD, as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
