Grandchildren of two of the sons of this pioneer Pisek family still live here, Alfred Kolar, son of John, and Mary (Kolar) Mytar, daughter of Joseph. Many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren are scattered throughout the United States working in many professions. Some have become teachers, a doctor, others as businessmen and women, of all kinds. Some are technicians, high in the Aero-space industry, some still work the land as did their grandparents before them, many were and are ranchers in Montana. At one time, more than 40,000 acres of land were controlled by members of the family. Born in Czechoslovakia, Jan and Barbara Kolar with two children came to the United States in 1875, first settling in Green Bay, Wis., where they lived for 13 years, five more of their children were born there. In 1888, Jan moved his family to Pisek, were four more children were born. The Jan Kolar family consisted of 11 children. The oldest were Mary and Lena. Born in Wisconsin were Albert, Lawrence, John, Barbara and Anna. The four who were born in Pisek were Frank, Elizabeth, Jacob and Joseph. In 1889, Jan bought land one mile north of Pisek where he farmed for 21 years. When Jan left the farm in 1911, his son, Joseph, remained working the land for another 18 years. Jan was among the first "custom" threshers in the county, owning a machine with which he threshed for other farmers. He also represented the Czech newspaper, "Vlastenec." While living in Pisek, Jan's sons operated a number of local businesses. John Kolar ran a livery stable, which was located on the block where the park is today. He also served as policeman for many years. Albert operated St. Anthony Elevator. Part of this building still stands, incorporated in what today is the GTA Elevator. Lawrence had a meat market in town. In 1929, Joseph opened a meat market and later built a locker plant which he operated for more than 20 years. After leaving the farm in 1911, Jan and Barbara moved to Montana, part of the family joined them there. They remained in that state until 1917 when they returned to Pisek. For a place to live, Jan bought the building that has been the first church in Pisek, located on what today is the southwest corner of Church and Newton Streets. In 1892, when the present St. John's Church was built, the old church building was converted into a schoolhouse, and was used until 1913, the year Pisek's present school was built. Jan Kolar remodeled this building and lived there until his death in 1938, Barbara having preceded him in death in 1933. Joseph Kolar acquired this old property and early in the 1940s tore the building down and used the lumber from this old landmark to build the house which is still standing across the street from what is now the oldest building in Pisek, St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church.
