Description	:	In 1911 John (Jan Willem) Gelderman and his cousin Jacob Visser immigrated to Canada. John had been working in the family bakery in the Netherlands, but there did not seem to be much of a future there. The plan was to go to Canada to look for work, and then to return home to prepare a move to Canada for the rest of the family. Lack of money kept John in Canada, and he never saw his parents again. In 1916 John met Reka Wichers, the oldest of eight children, whose family had just immigrated from Nijverdal, Overijissel, Netherlands. They were married July 1, 1920 in Edmonton, and left on their honeymoon to Neerlandia, to the homestead John had been working on. A year later John received the patent to his homestead.
