At the age of nine years, she came with her parents to Iowa. On January 9, 1865 she was united in marriage to Hugh Gillaspey at Montezuma, Iowa. To this union ten children were born, four preceding their mother and father in death. Mr. and Mrs. Gillaspey made their home in Iowa until 1881 when with their eight children they came to Nebraska. On the banks of the Platte River they built their first Nebraska home, a sod house. Theirs was the life of the pioneer, transforming a barren land into the most beautiful of farming states. Making a treeless prairie into broad stretches of comfortable homes. Busy cities and villages, waving fields of ripening grain, facing obstacles bravely, overcoming tremendous difficulties to splendor and grandeur of manhood and womanhood. While a child, Mrs. Gillaspey united with the Christian church, a faith which she loyally possessed until she passed away. She knew the meaning of life’s varied circumstances, moments of … mingled with sorrow … Gillapsey passed… Left to mourn … three sons, Henry, Hutchinson, KS., Frank, Midwest, WY., Hugh, Waterloo Neb., three daughters, Mrs. Henry Fee, Napier Neb., Mrs. James Pinne, Waterloo; three brothers, Grant Harper, Des Moines, IA., George Harper, Pueblo, CO., Tom Harper, Des Moines, IA., one sister, Ella, 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held last Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Waterloo Community Presbyterian church, Rev. W. O. Samuelson, Valley, officiating. Interment was in Prospect Hill cemetery.
