Orangeville Banner, June 27, 1907, page 3 - Mrs. Jane SPEERS Mrs. Speers, widow of the late Richard Speers, died at the home of her son, Richard D., lot 20, 4th con., east, Caledon, on Monday, the 17th inst. Deceased, whose maiden name was Duke, was one of Caledon's oldest residents, having come to Canada with her parents and other members of her family in 1842. They first settled in Mono on lot 3, 5th line, on the farm now occupied by Mr. Wesley Duke. The land at that time was covered with forest and Mr. and Mrs. Duke set diligently to work to make for themselves a home, bringing up their little family in the fear of God, and teaching them to be honest, industrious and thrifty men and women, well fitted to do their part in the upbuilding of our land as it now is. We cannot but feel the sincerest esteem and gratitude for those old pioneers who have spent their lives to hand down the noble heritage which they leave behind. In the course of time the lady now deceased became the wife of Richard Speers and came to live in Caledon. The result of this union was a family of four sons and three daughters: Robert, of Manitoulin ; Alexander, of 4th line Caledon ; William John of Caledon East ;, Mrs. McKinley, of Mono Mills ; Mrs. Partridge, of Toronto ; and at home, Jennie and Richard D. who ministered tenderly to their mother in her last days of feebleness before death came to separate them for a time. Besides these children who all survive, deceased leaves one brother, James, who is yet hearty and active. The funeral took place on Wednesday to St. John's burying ground, Mono, and was largely attended. The casket in which the remains reposed was covered with flowers including a wreath from the grandchildren, an urn from the children, and a spray. The pallbearers were Messrs. Alex. D., William J., Richard D., and Wesley Speers, William McKinley and Robert McKim. The funeral services were conducted by Mr. Hornby, who has charge of the Anglican parish here for the summer, who also preached an impressive memorial service on Sunday last in the church at Mono Mills.
