Murray: Jane (Jennie) Ellis Murray Jane was a daughter of Henry Ellis and Ann (Millhouse) his second wife. She was baptized on the 18 August 1867 at St. Guthlac Church in Kirton in Holland, Lincolnshire, England by the Reverend C. B. Smith. Jane was one of eighteen children of Henry, the names of only nine of them known: James, Mary, Charles, Henry S., Fannie, Jane (Jennie), Harriet D., Elizabeth, and John S. Not all of the children emigrated to the United States with their parents. In April of 1878, Henry and Ann left England and emigrated to the United States first settling in Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa where they lived in a small settlement known as Pony Hollow. Those known to have immigrated are: John, Jane, Fanny, Harriet, Elizabeth, and Henry. Today the area only boasts a trail by that name: Pony Hollow Trail. As Jane grew into her teens, in the 1880s, she was no longer living at home with her family. She was living in Marion, Iowa in the home of Benjamin Nott at 189 Ninth Street, where she worked as a domestic. Benjamin Nott was a druggist in Marion, and served on the City Council in that town. She had been living with the Nott family since she was 13 years ago, and she remained living with them until her marriage to Theotes Murray on 17 January 1885. The marriage ceremony was performed by Reverend Henry Waterman, pastor of the Congregational Church. Jane was 17 years old at the time, and wore her first silk dress for the occasion. It was dark red, trimmed in steel cut buttons, and required eighteen yards of material. The dress was made by two local seamstresses. Theotes Murray later purchased the home from Benjamin Nott, and he, Jane and Theotes’ mother Nancy, and his grandmother, Eliizabeth all lived in the house. Grandmother Elizabeth passed away on 10 May 1891 at the age of 93. His mother Nancy would live with them until her death in 1920 at the age of 99. In 1880 Theotes worked as a tinner for Wallace and Smythe Hardware, but later he worked for 48 years for the Milwaukee Railroad as a conductor, and in later years in the roundhouse. One of his souvenirs as a conductor was a hatchet thrown at the train by an Indian as the train traveled out west. Eventually Jane and Theotes had three children: Myrtle May who married John Stoneburner, Verna Lee who married George Glen Mott and moved to California, and Henry LeRoy. Henry LeRoy, built and flew an airplane with John Mullins (who later became mayor of Marion.) He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for the railroad as a machinist, served in World War I, and after the war married Clara Pliska in Jackson, Minnesota. In Jackson he was credited with building the town’s first fire engine. He was transferred to Chicago where he remained until his early death in 1939 after developing lung cancer. Jane was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She served as second Vice President of the Priscilla Guild Officers. In 1935 Jane and Theotes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Three years later, Theotes passed away, and on 22 December 1941, Jane passed away at her daughter Myrtle’s home in Dubuque on 22 December 1941, at the age of 74.
