Description	:	Jane and her husband Thomas are both tricky because there are many wrong trees circulating with significant mistakes for both her father and her husband. Be careful to look at the sources. Jane's parents were: Gordon Huston born about 1798 in Monaghan, Ireland. Almost everyone in Ancestry has Armagh as his birthplace. If you look at the census, it says that is the birthplace of his wife but his birthplace clearly says Monaghan. He must have moved later to Armagh County but he was not born there. If you look at the census, it says that is the birthplace of his wife but his birthplace clearly says Monaghan. He must have moved later to Armagh County but he was not born there. He died on 07 Sep 1856 in Huron Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada. Gordon was recorded in the 1851 census taken in January 1852, but not in the 1861 census in Huron Township, Bruce Co. Canada West where his family and widow were located. His death date is recorded in Jane's family Bible. Family history passed down says they were peasant farmers in Ireland and the landlord's surname was Gordon. Isabella Nicholson born about 1798 at Armagh County, Lock Neigh, Kildare, Ireland. Died 2 Jul 1876 at Lot 29, Concession 8, Huron Twp, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Her date of death was also recorded by Jane in the family Bible. Marriage 23 Jun 1823 • St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Montréal, Québec, Canada. Gordon Huston of [Fort] William Henry, shoemaker, and Isabella Nicholson of Montreal, spinster, were married by licence at Montreal on the twenty third day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three. Father Charles and brothers William, Charles, Gordon and John Huston emigrated to Quebec. They stayed at Fort William Henry until they could take up their land in Kildare Township. The Huston's are interesting and I have collected some other information related to Jane's family that is too long to share here. Jane was born 2 Feb 1827 at Fort William Henry (later renamed Sorel), Québec, Canada. Some trees list her as Jane Ann but that is her daughter's name. There is no evidence for a middle name Ann. In 1860 city council asked the government to change the name William Henry, the town name since its founding, to Sorel. The request was granted. The population was 3,345: 3,238 Canadians of french origin, 1 Scot, 7 Irishmen. It was Fort William Henry at the time Jane was born. Jane got married 02 Feb 1847 • St. Gabriel's Presbyterian Church, Montréal, Québec, Canada. Thomas Thompson Bachelor Farmer and Jane Huston Spinster both residing in the Parish of l'Assomption are joined in marriage (by bans) at Montreal. Witnesses: Gordon Huston, William McMullin, Jane Scott. Thomas and Jane's Family Bible also lists the same date. In March 1848 Thomas became Guardian to his orphaned younger siblings and half siblings. His Uncle James Allan (brother of Elizabeth) petitioned for a guardian and a sub-guardian for Elizabeth's four minor children (Grace and Agnes Thompson and Elizabeth and James Wood). Application began on 25 Feb and approved 6 Mar 1848. James Allan was appointed Tutor and Thomas Thompson was appointed sub-Tutor. Court documents regarding this Guardianship are on FamilySearch.org. By 1856 when their daughter Agnes is born, Thomas and Jane are living on a farm located at Lot 29, Concession 8, Huron Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. She lived there for the rest of her life. The farm was 4 kilometers west of Ripley in Huron Township. Ripley is a village situated near the middle of the township. It was named for a town in Derbyshire, England. Ripley's post office opened in 1853 so they would have been one of the first settler families. In the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 Canadian census records she resides at the farm. Note that various Hustons (Gordon, William, Charles - Jane's family) are listed as neighbours in the census. Thomas and Jane had 12 children. I am working on linking their memorials.
