The Family Bible contains his birthdate in his own handwriting however it does not state a location. The online sources conflict between Lower Canada and Glasgow, Scotland but I found his birth and baptismal record and L'Assomption, Canada is correct. L'Assomption is 50 km northeast of Montréal. An off-island suburb of Montreal, in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the L'Assomption River. Between 1774 and 1888, L'Assomption was the most prosperous and important town between Montreal and Trois-Rivières. Baptism 17 Jun 1825 • St. Gabriel's Street Presbyterian Church, Montréal, Québec, Canada. Robert Thompson of the Parish of L'Assomption in the District of Montreal and Elisabeth Allan his wife had a son born 9 Feb baptized 17 Jun 1925 named Thomas. This is the same church as Thomas' wedding. His parents had four children. He was not an only child as some of his descendants believed. In addition to the researched paper trail, Ancestry DNA links me to the living descendants of Grace and Agnes. (1800–1832) His mother remarried 24 Jun 1833. Her second husband was James Wood and they had two children together who were half siblings of Thomas. Elizabeth and James Wood. Thomas got married 02 Feb 1847 • St. Gabriel's Presbyterian Church, Montréal, Québec, Canada. Thomas Thompson Bachelor Farmer and Jane Huston Spinster both residing in the Parish of l'Assomption are joined in marriage (by bans) at Montreal. Witnesses: Gordon Huston, William McMullin, Jane Scott. Thomas and Jane's Family Bible also lists the same date. Thomas' mother Elizabeth Allan passed away of dropsy/edema. (1797–1848) Her second husband predeceased her. In March 1848 Thomas became Guardian to his orphaned younger siblings and half siblings. Uncle James Allan (brother of Elizabeth) petitioned for a guardian and a sub-guardian for Elizabeth's four minor children (Grace and Agnes Thompson and Elizabeth and James Wood). Application began on 25 Feb and approved 6 Mar 1848. James Allan was appointed Tutor and Thomas Thompson was appointed sub-Tutor. Court documents regarding this Guardianship are on FamilySearch.org. Residence 1852 • Artemesia, Grey County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada. Birthplace: Lower Canada. Occupation: servant. By 1856 when their daughter Agnes is born, Thomas and Jane are living on a farm located at Lot 29, Concession 8, Huron Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. He lived there for the rest of his life. The farm was 4 kilometers west of Ripley in Huron Township. Ripley is a village situated near the middle of the township. It was named for a town in Derbyshire, England. Ripley's post office opened in 1853 so they would have been one of the first settler families. In the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 Canadian census records he resides at the farm and his birthplace is always listed as Quebec/Lower Canada. Note that various Hustons (Gordon, William, Charles - Jane's family) are listed as neighbours in the census. Death 24 Mar 1897 • Lot 29, Concession 8, Huron Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Cause of death: asthma and le grippe (the flu). It says he was born in Quebec. Thomas and Jane had 12 children. I am working on linking their memorials. Those death certificates cause confusion but are incorrect. The information was provided by well intentioned informants who just did not know the truth. Death certificates are only as reliable as the knowledge of the living informant providing the information. Thomas was long deceased by that point. I have the birth and baptismal record which agrees with the census records and his own death certificate. He was definitely born in Canada. This is a long biography because he deserves the truth to be out there. Many sources online are completely inaccurate which meant it took a long time to research the truth. As his grave says, "gone but not forgotten." Please contact the memorial manager if you are a descendant and would like to exchange information. Someone out there has a photo of Thomas and Jane.
