Jane Minto, wife of the late Frederick Richards, was born at New Castle, upon Tyne, Northumberlandshire, England, on the 25th of June 1832. She came to America with her parents in 1840 and settled first in Pittsburgh, Pa. They came to Cedar Co., Iowa, in 1848, and she married in Tipton to Mr. Richards in 1849. Jane Minto, wife of the late Frederick Richards, was born at New Castle, upon Tyne, Northumberlandshire, England, on the 25th of June 1832. She came to America with her parents in 1840 and settled first in Pittsburgh, Pa. They came to Cedar Co., Iowa, in 1848, and she married in Tipton to Mr. Richards in 1849. To this union were born ten children, six of whom survive, viz; Mrs. Elizabeth Pfaff, Mrs. Mary Stine, Mrs. Anna Whan, Mrs. Sarah Piatt, Mrs. Estella Woodis and Mrs. Temperance Swartzlender. Two sons died in infancy, and another son and daughter died after they reached maturity. Mrs. Richards' early religious life was fostered in the Episcopal church, in which she was baptized in her native parish of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England. She was a member of the Episcopal church by baptism, and cherished a great attachment for it all through her after life. Her last hours were comparatively free from suffering, and it was evident to all present that her end was peace. She departed this life on Wednesday, the 4th day of June, at 10:30 a.m. Had she lived until June 25th, she would have been 81 years of age; and during her long life, she had never been known to be seriously ill, until her last sickness, by which she was only confined to the bed for two weeks. Truly hers' was a wonderful record for health and strength. The funeral services were conducted at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Chas. Swartzlender, by Rev. E. Wallace Waits, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, on Friday at 10 a.m. June 6, 1913, and interment was made in Wallick's cemetery, Cedar Co., beside her deceased husband and children.
