Jane West Stevens married James Franklin Stevens on February 2, 1837 in Athens Co., Ohio. Jane West Stevens and James Franklin Stevens children are: George Washington, Sarah Ann, Ezza, James M., Mary C. Thomas Lee, Lafayette, John S., Joseph F. Stevens. STEVENS-Mrs. Jane Stevens, grandmother of George P. Stevens, of this city, died at her home 1 1/2 miles outh of Dudley, Iowa, on Wednesday, February 19, aged 90 years, 1 month and 11 days. She leaves four sons and one daughter, all residing in Wapello county except one son who is in Washington state. Mrs. Stevens was one of the pioneers of Wapello co., having resided there over sixty years. Her husband was frozen to death about 33 years ago during one of the fierce blizzards such as formerly swept over Iowa. Burial in Columbia Cemetery one mile north of Dudley. She and her husband are buried in the same row as her brother Isaac Speed. Headstones face west, and lie to the west of the entrance and road in the cemetery and about 3 rows west of thos of Amon and Esther Blackman Arnold. The Stevens came to IA in 1853 by wagon train from Chillicother, Ross Co., OH to chillicothe, Wapello Co., IA (named for OH place). Before being in Ohio the Stevens family had been in the U.S. so long that the country of origin was unknown. The wagon train originated in Chillcothe, Ohio and stopped over night at Garrison Rock by Ottumwa, IA. Many of the people in the wagon train then setted around Chillicothe, IA. May of the people in the wagon train then settled around Chillicothe, Iowa. Iowa is Indian for "This is the Place" and was nichnamed the "Hawkeye State" by early settlers. Iowa was already a territory when the Stevens family settled there. The Black Hawk purchase in 1833 had opened eastern Iowa to white settlers. Farming was said to be not as good in Ohio so the move to Iowa. James F. Stevens farmed Section 3 in Polk Twsp., Wapello Co., Iowa.
