Read More	RAY, Janet Lou [Pencil] Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend; Janet Lou (Pencil) Ray, age 77 of Springfield, went to be with Jesus on Friday, December 30, 2011 in the home of her daughter Lori where she had been lovingly cared for by her family over the past year. Janet, affectionately known as Grandma Ray to her adoring grandchildren, was born on December 15, 1934 in the home of her parents, Edgar and Beatrice Marie (McAfee) Pencil on Upper Valley Pike near Springfield. Janet graduated from Northwestern High School (1952), excelling in academics and enjoying choir and theatre. She was awarded a scholarship to the Springfield City Hospital School of Nursing. Janet graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1955 and was recognized as the "Best All-Around Nurse". She was a life-long caregiver, first for her younger brother and sisters, then for her children, the residents of the Ohio Masonic Home, and finally for her parents, aunt and uncle. After graduation, Janet worked at the Springfield City Hospital. She put her career on hold to raise her children. Later, Janet returned to the nursing profession at the Ohio Masonic Home where she worked for twenty-five years, retiring in 2000. There her responsibilities included staff development, nurse aide training, safety, employee health, and many others. Janet accepted the Lord as her Savior when she was 16 years old and became a member of Donnels Creek Church of the Brethren. She was the first in her family to come to Jesus, and her faithful witness helped lead many in her family to Christ including her parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren. Janet was a member of First Christian Church since 1968. There she served as a Vacation Bible School teacher, Sunday School teacher, as well as a mentor and counselor to many women. Janet also was part of the Barnabas ministry, active in the Women's Council, supported many missionaries, and volunteered at the Good Samaritan Outreach Center. She was active in the Springfield Emmaus community. During her retirement Janet was able to devote more time to her ministries as well as attend many of her grandchildren's special events. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Kathy Clark, twin daughters, and her great granddaughter, Olivia Buroker. Janet is survived by her children, Michael S. (Gaybrielle) Ray of Urbana, Lori (John) Foor of Powell, and Linda (Roger) Maxton of Springfield; grandchildren, Polly Buroker of Mt. Victory, Michael Ray of Urbana, Josh, Benjamin, Hannah, and Sarah Foor of Powell, Ashley (Keith) Hoopes of Huber Heights, Amy (Joe) McCarty of Fairborn, and Stacy (Chris) Place of Germany; great grandchildren, Savannah and Adeline Hoopes, Kenzie and Carly McCarty, and Reilly Place; siblings, Donald (Jackie) Pencil of Temperence, Michigan, Linda (Gerry) Chaffee of Beavercreek, Judy (Steve) Hoberty of Springfield, Lee Pencil of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and Nola Jean (Patrick) Suarez of Springfield; brother-in-law Howard (Norene) Ray; uncle, Herbert Pencil; dear cousins, Carolyn (Roger) Barcelona and Flo Rower; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friends, Janice Burton, Lois Hodges, Rev. John and Jane Wilson, Ramona Lyle, and Eddie Fisher; her Monday Night Bible Study friends; and numerous other friends. The family will receive family and friends at First Christian Church, Springfield, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012 and one hour prior to her funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, which will also be at the Church. The service will be conducted by pastor Craig Grammer. Her final resting place will be at Myers Cemetery near North Hampton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Outreach Center. The family would like to thank her friends and church family for their support and prayers during the last year as Janet battled gall bladder cancer. The family will be served by the Jackson, Lytle & Lewis Funeral Home.
