In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial donation to the Sioux Falls Humane Society. Janet Marlene was born on May 2, 1926 in Mankato, MN to Albert and Henrietta (Smith) Backus. She was raised and received her education through her junior year of high school in Flandreau, SD. Janet then continued her education in Sioux Falls, SD graduating from Washington High School. Janet was united in marriage with Robert Wallace Hurd on June 7, 1945, in Sioux Falls, SD. Janet and Robert were blessed with one son, Robert Lee Hurd and lived in the communities of Dayton, OH, Mitchell, SD, Rapid City, SD, Duluth, MN and Grand Island, NE before making their home in Sioux Falls, SD in 1971. She stated that her wonderful husband and son to share with the world brightened her life. She was a member of the Elks, the Loyal Order of the Moose and First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed golfing and was a former member of Elmwood Ladies Golf Association, Hartford Country Club and Arrowhead Country Club in Rapid City. In addition to golfing, Janet enjoyed, bird watching, taking care of her dogs, working in her yard and meeting new people. Above all she loved her time spent with her family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all those who shared her life. Grateful for having shared her life are a son, Rob (Beth De Grote) Hurd of Sioux Falls, SD; two granddaughters: Kelly (Neil) Peterson and Jamie (Chad) Wolfgang all of Sioux Falls, SD: ten great-grandchildren: Jalynn, Tyson, Avalon, Daxton, Hawken, Caitlyn, Cora, Benjamin, Trace and Maxwell; and a host of other relatives and friends. Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Hurd on June 19, 2010; her parents, Albert and Henrietta Backus; and four brothers. - George Boom Funeral Home
