He married Janet Backus on June 7, 1945, in Sioux Falls, SD. Robert then began his career with N.C.R. Corp as a Field Engineer. Over the years his promotions with N.C.R. took him to Dayton, OH, Mitchell, SD, Rapid City, SD, Duluth, MN and Grand Island, NE. At the time of his retirement, Robert had reached the position of Manager. He retired in 1985 after 40 years of service with N.C.R. Corp. In his free time Robert was involved with the Civil Air Patrol for 37 years, and the Elks and the Loyal Order of the Moose for 25 years. He also enjoyed golfing with friends and family and had hit two Hole-in-Ones. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed by all those who shared his life. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Zola Hurd; and brother, Richard. In lieu of flowers, Roberts family requests that memorials be directed to the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
