Read More	SCHUTTE, Janice Beasley 83, of Xenia, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Legacy Assisted Living. She was born December 13, 1929, in Tampa, Florida, the daughter of Jennis Vehoran and Verda Hensel Beasley. She was a member of St Brigid Church. Janice graduated from Springfield Catholic Central High School in 1947, and worked as a housewife and mother while raising her six sons during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. That might have been challenge enough for many women of her generation; Janice, however, thought differently than many. In 1969, Janice returned to school to study nursing, graduating from Clark Technical College in 1971 as a registered nurse. She worked briefly at Greene Memorial Hospital before finding her calling at the Ohio Soldiers & Sailors Orphan's Home (OS&SO), which in 1978 would be renamed the Ohio Veterans Children's Home (OVCH), where she worked until moving on to St Joseph's Children's Home in Dayton. At each of these locations, Janice thrived in her role as caregiver for ill and troubled children and teenagers. After retiring from nursing, Janice turned her attention to other endeavors: she grew a variety of roses and other flowers in her gardens; read countless novels and magazines; enjoyed music and movies; walked in Volksmarches; canned peaches and cherries; baked cookies, pies and cakes; became an expert in genealogical research while compiling family histories; spent precious time with her grandchildren; enjoyed an occasional glass or two of her favorite wines; and embraced a dream of traveling that, unfortunately, would not be realized as Alzheimer's disease slowly overtook her mind and body. But even as Alzheimer's disease progressed, Janice often was cognizant enough to warn her sons of its evils and to make sure her financial and personal affairs were in order for the day when she could no longer care for herself. Operating in the sometimes fleeting windows of awareness that the disease permitted her during the final years of her life, Janice knew many happy hours but also many anguished days of frustration and confusion as her physical health failed along with her mental capacity. Throughout her struggle, she never lost her desire to learn, her love of life and laughter, her longing to be mentally alert, her need to tend the roses, her strong sense of independence, her ability to argue a point as well as to make others laugh, and the love she held for her husband, children and grandchildren. For the last two years of her life, Janice lived at Legacy Village Assisted Living, for her a fitting return to the former OVCH campus, where from her room she could view the old stone Armory Building and the refurbished Administration Building, and on good days realize where she was. She also never completely lost her nursing skills or the tendency to nurture; it was not unusual to see Janice offering comfort and assistance to other Legacy Village residents during her stay there. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Brunsman, who was with Janice for every step of her medical care journey; the caregivers at Legacy Village, who knew they were caring for a former nurse and appreciated her sensitivity to the demands of the profession and Janice's friendly banter; the Xenia Fire Department EMTs, who handled Janice with care and dignity on every transport; the nurses and staff at Greene Memorial Hospital, who provided the finest care possible during a difficult time with just the right combination of professional care, good-natured attitudes, a sense of humor, and respect for their patient; and especially the staff from Hospice of the Miami Valley, who were by Janice's side around the clock at the end, providing their special blend of love, skill, and attention. She is survived by her husband whom she married in December 1957; six sons and daughters-in-law; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and by many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
