Read More	Buried Nov 29,2011 Lot 1190 Space- 4 Janice Lorraine Harden Dec 15,1918-Nov 23,2011 Janice Lorraine Harden, also affectionately known as "Toots" by some of her relatives, was 92 years old when she entered into her rest at home in North Platte on Nov. 23, 2011.She was born in North Platte on Dec. 15, 1918, at the home of her parents, Benjamin Cornelius and Esma Lillian Weaver Davis.She was the youngest of seven children. She attended Lincoln and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, Franklin Junior High School on the corner of 4th and Dewey and the North Platte High School. She started taking piano lessons in the fifth grade from Mrs. Crippen. Instead of her mother making her practice she had to make her stop practicing.While in junior high she was let out of school around 10:30 or 11 to go and play the piano at the School for the Deaf located in the Lincoln Elementary School. The piano was setting on boards that the students would stand on to feel the beat of the music while they played rhythm band instruments.She graduated from the North Platte High School in 1936 and with her diploma she obtained a Teaching Certificate from the County Superintendent of Schools. Her first teaching job was up at the Birdwood Table North of Hershey in the fall of 1936.She married Herbert L. Harden on Dec. 24, 1939, in McCook. She doesn't know how they were able to obtain a marriage license at the courthouse in McCook on a Sunday. She taught at the Chamberlain School on the Chamberlain Ranch South of Hershey for the school year 1940-41.When the weather permitted, her husband would fly her to school and come and get her in a Curtiss Pusher while the Chamberlain kids rode horses to school. After Pearl Harbor anyone who was a pilot was called to help gear up for the war effort, and she and her mother-in-law were left in the summer of 1942 to milk 14 cows. She was a city girl who had become a country girl when she married. She worked for many years at the Harris News Agency and subsequently at the Great Plains Medical Center. After she retired she worked as a volunteer at the hospital gift shop as well as playing the piano for programs at the North Platte nursing homes. She was honored by the North Platte area Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).Janice was a loving mother and adored by all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who knew her. She was a member of the North Platte Seventh-day Adventist Church and served as pianist and organist for many years and her music was very much appreciated. She also served as church treasurer for many years. She enjoyed making quilts for her children and grandchildren as well as bird watching.Janice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Austin, Virgil, Lyle and Marshal Davis; and two sisters,Ina Ziegler and Violet Hunter. Services will be Nov. 29, at the North Platte Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will follow at the North Platte Cemetery. North Platte Telegraph,November 25,2011.
