Brokaw, Sr., 93, of Sioux Falls, SD died Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. His service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 23 in the Wildwood Mausoleum at Hills of Rest Memorial Park, Sioux Falls. Jarl Bush Brokaw Sr., son of Lowell and Jennie (Wunderlich) Brokaw, was born June 23, 1922 in Manilla, IA. He lived in Sioux City, IA and then moved to Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated in 1940 from Washington High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and proudly served in the European Campaign. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Jarl was united in marriage with Patricia Jacobsen and her two children, Michael and Mary, in Sioux Falls, SD on June 25, 1949. Their family was made complete with the birth of Jarl “Bush” Jr. in 1951. In 1950, Jarl’s National Guard unit was activated and he again served his country in Alaska during the Korean War. He served as Commander of the Sioux Falls Army National Guard 147th Artillary unit. He retired from military service in 1969. After his service in Alaska, he returned to his family in Sioux Falls and his job at Northern States Power. Once the Pathfinder Nuclear Plant was completed, he began working there until he was transferred to Red Wing, MN where he worked at Prairie Island Nuclear Plant. He retired at the age of 63 and moved to Marietta, GA where he began inspecting nuclear power plants throughout the United States. He again retired and moved to Sun City West where he was involved with Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse for 20 years, retiring for the final time in 2004. Church was an important part of Jarl’s life. He was an active member at Riverside Presbyterian in Sioux Falls and was a charter member at Brandon Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church until the time of his death. Spending time outdoors was important to Jarl. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, golf, softball, and photography. He enjoyed racquetball and was known to work out at the gym daily until the age of 91. Spending time with his great-great grandchildren was his favorite way to spend time and they will miss him dearly. He lived a very full life with many adventures, too numerous to mention. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his daughter, Mary O'Connell, Sioux Falls; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, June (Merrill) Ring, San Diego, CA, and Joyce Blood, of Kansas; brother, James Brokaw, Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, on January 12, 2007; two sons, Michael Brokaw and Jarl “Bush” Brokaw, Jr.; a grandson, Shane DeYong; a great-grandson, Matthew DeYong; two sisters, Janet Iverson and JoAnn Kugler; son-in-law, Richard O’Connell; three brothers-in-law, Russell Blood, Bill Kugler, Tom Iverson; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Brokaw and Harriet Brokaw. -------------------------
