He had been sick since Thanksgiving Day, but was only considered in a serious condition for about three weeks before his death. His ailment was asthma and acute bronchitis. Jasper Bouslaugh was born in Henry county Indiana, November 17, 1841. With his parents he moved to Center township, Monona county, Iowa, in 1859, being among the very earliest settlers of this county. The remainder of his life was spent here. During his long life in the county he has seen all the changing conditions from the pioneer days until now. He has a very wide circle of friends, especially among the older settlers. He enlisted in the Union army in the autumn of 1882 at Davenport. Iowa, he was transferred from the volunteer service to the U, S. regular army, and later his regiment had the honor of being Gen. Sherman's body guard. He saw much of the real war, being in many of the great battles, among them being Corinth, Lookout Mountain and Gettysburg. He received honorable discharge at Ft. Riley, Kans., at the close of the war. The funeral occurred Sunday, April 7, at the Christian church in Castana, and was conducted by Rev. Adair, assisted by Rev. Perrin. As he was one of the pioneers of this county, a large concourse of friends and neighbor came to pay their last respects. The pall bearers were six old veterans, named as follows: C. A. Miller, Mapleton: S. Livengood, R. Carroll, J. Carroll, D. Cairns and S. Smith, of Castana. The remains were laid to rest in the Center cemetery, near the farm where most of his life was spent - Connie Swearingen
