Mr. Hite runs an extensive farm and is assisted by his boys, most of whom are mere lads, and on Saturday morning as his 12 year old son, Roy(sic), was driving the cattle the horse ran against a cow with such force as to throw the boy off and at the same time the horse fell and rolled over the boy, fracturing his skull at the base and slightly lacerating the brain. Drs. Boyer and Foster were at once summoned and did what they could for him, but he got no better. On Tuesday, Drs. Boyer, Foster, Pritchard and Gilman had a consultation and they decided on making and operation, or trephine, which in some degree relieved the sufferer, but yet they had but a slight hope of his recovery. The family has the sympathy of their numerous friends in this city. Later-- The boy died on Tuesday night after great suffering. His funeral took place from his father's residence, on Nov. 25, attended by a very large concourse of friends and neighbors, the funeral cortege being near three quarters of a mile long. A beautiful tribute to Jasper's memory was paid by his schoolmistress, Miss Jenny Dusenberry, and school mates, who attended the funeral in a body, and recited the Lord's prayer, then singing by the casket of their departed school mate the beautiful song they all loved so well, "When the roll is called up yonder we'll be there." This was one of the saddest funerals we ever attended. The nobility of Jasper's character, his fatal taking off, his intense suffering, and wide-spread acquaintance and the intense loyalty of his school mates, all contributed to make an affecting scene rarely ever witnessed before. The funeral was conducted by G.W. Brown and interment was made in the Cherokee cemetery.
